    Hatchling Corn STILL Wont Eat!!!!!

So.....another failed feeding attempt! 5 week old hatchling amel corn NOT eating for me. I placed him in small tubberwear type cup last night w/ a thawed pinkie and woke up this morning and the pinkie was still in there. How long should I wait between feedings before I try again? Any personal feeding tricks/tips that work for stubborn snakes will be appreciated. Should I be concerned? Any advice given will be noted as this is my first snake I've owned.......thanks!

I'm no expert, but I can tell you what my vet told me to do when my baby corn wouldn't eat. And it worked.

She said to try a live pinky at first, to stimulate the snake into eating. when she (mine is believed to be female) is eating those well, switch to freshly killed. When she's eating those well, switch to thawed. So, now my fussy little snake will eat the many pinkies sitting in my freezer.

The live and fresh-killed ones cost me a little under $2 each at the pet store. One pet store was willing to kill them for me, for the fresh-killed stage. The other pet store wasn't. Call ahead and find out.

The vet also said if the snake started getting lethargic from not eating, to bring her in to be force-fed. I am SO glad I did not have to do that. I'm sure it would be a bad experience for the snake.

Thanks Raeyin! So just leave a live pinkie w/ him/her overnight and see what happens? When should I try again?

Have you tried feeding him in the enclosure? I suggest trying the f/t again, make sure it's warm and leave it in the enclosure overnight. Don't watch him eat, he could be shy! Out of curiosity, what are the temperatures in the enclosure? How are you measuring them?

My first attempt was inside the enclosure. I dangled the pinkie in front of him for like 10min. When he didnt take I left the pinkie inside the enclosure but only for like 15min or so then took it out. He is in a 10gal for now. The temp on his hot side is 88-90 F measured by a zoomed digital w/ probe. His cool side is in the low 80s measured by an accurite digital. Im pretty bummed I can't get this little guy to eat. He's a cutie. Want him to be healthly! ;(

I am inclined to believe he's too hot. In a ten gallon its going to be hard to achieve any type of temp gradient. What type of heating do you have set up? What type of hides?

I was thinking the same exact thing! 10gallons are terrible for anything that needs a temp gradient. Unfortunatley that's all I have at the moment. Working on getting a 20L. I'm using a Under Tank Heater w/ a rheostat. I have a coconut hide on the hot side and another hide on the cool side w/ a water bowl in the middle. Gunna work on getting the temps down a bit.

There is a couple of things you can try at the next feeding. Dipping the pinkie in tuna juice or chicken broth.
You can also try "braining" the pinkie. You slit the top of the skull open and smear the juices around. It sounds gross but it is a longstanding remedy for fussy hatchlings.

Thanks Merlin. So this is pretty common then? Try again in a couple days or so?
