I'm looking into getting hooked up for fibre optics in my home. This would be phone, tv and internet. Internet speeds of 20-30 mbps.
Best of all it will be cheaper than everything I have now.
I'm wondering if anyone currently has it and if there are any downsides?
Right now as they are wiring the town it's free hookup and all the hardware.

I have heard nothing but great things about Fios (our fiber optic service here). Its not available in my area, but places and people who have gotten it, don't complain.

We're lucky to get it. There's a company doing some of the small towns in my area. I live in a town of 5000 and the larger 100k + cities don't even have it yet.
For phone, internet and tv I'll be paying $115. That's a middle tv package.

We just got it a couple of days ago and it is AWESOME! much faster speeds on internet. TV is a lot clearer. And like you stated its cheaper. I also think that the guide is easier to use than that offered by our cable company, and because the guide itself is downloaded from the internet rather than through the cable it is faster.

Bad side was that it took 8 hours to get it installed once they finally got here. (they stood us up for the first instillation appointment we made)

I have heard a lot of bad things about FiOS, the fiber optic network from Verizon, here in New York. First of all, the internet is slower than cable. Also, you have to pay for HD service. I've heard also that there are several missing channels, and you don't get the Voom Network. Anyway, I know I probably sound like a cable commercial, but it's better service and for not much more.

Hate to tell you but their speeds are faster than cable. Wait a while yours will go up. Depending on your plan. Highest speed they have is 50 down/ 20 up. Eat that cable. Mid range same price you pay for cable is 20 down and 20 up. so cable is only 8-12 down atleast comcast.

Also with cable you have to pay for HD.

yeah I agree with Nate. We just got Fios installed and I like it MUCH better. The speed is a lot faster, customer service a lot nicer, and many more channels than comcast and oh yeah IT'S CHEAPER! And the router they have you use is wireless, so you don't need an additional wireless router to hook up to your laptop...
