Shedding/Icky Mites!
Hmmm... I just went to the pet store to get some mite stuff for my cornsnake, and as I have only had him a few weeks I asked if they had any mite problems. They said no... though I'm not sure if they would notice. I'm not everly confedent in their herping skills. (They were the ones who sold me a 5 gallon under tank heater and said that it was all I needed to heat my 10 gallon tank. Gah!)
Anyway, while I was there I happened to notice that the Red Tail boas were shedding in chunks, instead of a nice strip. Is this normal? Also... if it is abnormal, could it be related to snake mites?

Bad sheds are usually the results of husbandry problems: not enough humidity is a big factor. Also handling before the shed, feeding too soon before the shed, and yes mites will have an effect too: or more likely sprays or powders used on the snakes to treat mites.
I'm not sure what you meant about the undertank heater, you should only be actively heating about one third of your tank: you want to create a temperature gradient so the snake can choose where he finds it most comfortable. It should not be equally hot all over the tank.

Thanks for the response.... I am just trying to figure out where these things came from so it doesn't happen again!
And my heater issues: I realize that he doesn't need the whole tank heated, however the pet store informed me that he would not need any other source of heat for his warm end, which left most of his tank at an even 75 degrees. I was rather angry.

For snake cages you do want it cooler, and with 75 five degrees it is not to bad as long as you have a warm spot for the snake to go in to get warm if it needs to. As for the red tails, mine has never had a problem with shedding.
