Boa ?

What is the difference in color of boas, I have noticed between Kens well KJs baby and my baby, that they are different colors, is it to do with locality? mine seems to be a silver color to the more sandy color ones I have seen.

It could be due to locality or just individual animals - like every human is different, every animal is different,. look at our male boa Charley, he is very light and has pink hues on his face,. compared to our female Zeus, who is a very dark boa. It is more likely that most differences are just due to individuality however some will be due to locality,. no way to know which for sure.

I was led to believe that the southern and western regions of there habitat produce the darker colors, ie,,,the Argentinian being the darkest of all. The reputable breeder we got ours from "claims" it is from the Suriname region,,,hence the very light coloration

As Rachel said it can also just be individuals' differences. When I got my Maggie Mae she was in a tank with a bunch of babies, all of them her siblings from that breeding (I know the breeder personally). There was considerable variation in color among them. The ground color ranging from a dark charcoal to a very pale almost off-white.

Some localities are much more rare than others,. the Surinam red tail for example is pretty difficult to get hold of in captivity - at least true ones are. That said, true red tails of any kind are getting harder to come by, mainly due to cross-breeding with normal commons. Also, many breeders sell commons as red tails, so that they will sell more quickly and for a higher price.

Although it's not impossible for you both to have different localities, IMO it is still more likely that the colour differences are mainly due to individuality.

There is also the possibility of different morphs - common boas are becoming like corns and some of the morphs produced now include sunglows, albinos, anerytheristics, salmons, hypos, and so on.. There is the small possibility that your boas could have come from blood lines which had genetic traits for a certain morph, however this is more unlikely than them being diff localities, as the morphs have to be specially bred and are even higher in price.

There's a great website about boas, I'll post it when I dig it out. Also you could have a look at http://www.boamorphs.co.uk
