Re: Help Asap

I won't rant about feeding live to a snake because right now it's more important you make sure the snake is ok.

You should make sure she can't get infected now, you can put Neosporin on the wound for now, and you should put her on paper towel or newspaper substrate so nothing gets in the cut. WATCH the wound, if it starts to seem infected you need to take her to a vet to get it checked out, mouse bites can be serious! Contrary to popular belief even a small mouse can do major damage to snakes! From now on it's really important to feed frozen thawed, just too many risks with live! Next time the bite could be worse!

I've never personally had to deal with an injured snake before, but anyone here who has can chip in and help with things I left out

Re: Help Asap

There are a couple of different methods people have tried, in attempt to get snakes to eat f/t. I am sure someone else can help you more than me but either way, if you cant get them to take f/t.

Then what I would do and have had to in the past is give the mouse a good smack. At the pet store where we used to get mice they came in Chinese to go boxes lol and I would just smack the container against the wall a couple of times. It will at least stun the mouse and shake him up a bit.

Re: Help Asap

Keep a close eye on the injury - infections can come up quickly, and be very serious or even lethal. I'm glad he appears to be doing better.

I fought with one of our snakes for 3 years trying to convert him to frozen. For some snakes, it's rough to do, but in most cases, it CAN be done. Boas usually have a good feeding response.

wait a month or so, let him get a little hungry (I promise, it will not hurt him/her) and then offer a thawed rat (make sure it is thoroughly thawed - 12 hours or more out of freezer.) If it is not interested, you can warm it up to give it artificial "body heat" using a hair blow dryer, or even an over if you are careful, but absolutely not a microwave.

Re: Help Asap

A blow dryer works the best. Just hold the mouse about 12 inches away form the blower and let it get warm, not hot. Good luck and please try again and again and again to switch them.

Re: Help Asap

I thaw my rodents out thoroughly and then I put them in HOT tap water (no hotter than what comes out of the faucet), and soak them until the water starts to cool, then I empty that water out and add more hot water after about 10 minutes, I start to feed the snakes. Most of the time, they will never refuse a warmed rat. If they do, I re-try the next week, if they still refuse- I try again in another week. Like Dragoness, I have had tough snakes to convert to frozen, but they almost always do in the end. I had one ball python that refused thawed rats for 9 months, a second one went 6 months. Eventually, they came around to MY way of feeding.

Re: Help Asap

I used to do the f/t method of feeding with my boa and she was ok with it now I am lucky enough to get pre-killed from the pet store I frequent. I find she likes this more. If you cannot get pre-killed or don't want to whack the mouse yourself to stun it (I cant do this) You could try this, a friend of mine used to do it with her corn snake. Get a frozen mouse and thaw it out. Then get some chicken stock warm it up in the microwave and then put the mouse into it. Don't microwave the mouse. This will warm up the mouse and give it a stronger smell. I don't know if this is a normal thing to do but it worked with my friend.

Re: Help Asap

You still there? What happened with this?

I notice you said that "none of my snakes" are eating??? There may be some other problem that is affecting all of them?
