Am I feeding by boas the right amount and size of food
I have 2 red tail boas (boa constrictor constrictor I think) our girl, shenzy, is about 1.5 yo and about 3.5 feet and the boy, keeni, is about 3.5 to 4 yo and about 4.5 feet. I've been feeding them once a week her large mice and him small rats does that sound about right for feading them or is there some thing I should change? Am I feeding them to much or not enugh? I've had her about 8 months and him about 5 months and that is what both people recomended me to do but the both seem to get very hungry by the time we feed them again. |

that might be a bit much, i feed my bp 2 gerbils once a month, and shes about 3.5' long. id say try feeding them the same sized food that u r right now but only every other week or so, thats my opinion but DO NOT just take my word for it, as I dont own any boas myself

Basic rule of thumb is one prey animal about the size of the snake's body at the widest point. I feed once a week.
You may need to increase the size of the food. My 27 inch boa is already doing rat pups which is about the size of a large mouse.

yeah, my 3 ft boa is currently on very small adult rats. so, you may wanna increase size, but I feed weekly as well to younger animals. when the snake has finished swallowing the prey item, there should be a small lump left. Hope I helped you.

You should probably switch the girl over to rat pups or small rats now because she is gonna need rats when she is bigger so you should switch as soon as possible.(and she will get more nutrition from rats) The male at 4.5ft should be able to handle a medium to large rat weekly. My girl is about 5.5ft and she takes a jumbo rat once a week.

Thank you for the info and fast replys I'll defenatly look in to what sizes the pet store I go to has. My biggest problem is that the pet store I go to is the only pet store that that sells trust worthy feeders the only other place to get them is petco and I don't trust there feeders. The first Boa we had was 7 feet when we got him and already eating jumbo rats they were easy to find then because I had 5 or 6 stores to go to but between petco and petsmart all but the one has gone under. Again thank you for the help.

if you feed frozen thawed, you can easily order feeders online at www.rodentpro.com that is where I go, and they are VERY personable ppl...and its WAY cheaper and you have a choice on what size rats you get
you might want to look to see how thick the small rats they have are and compare it to the snake, i htink it may be able to take small rats, depending on how large the rat is. just a suggestion ![]() Danni |

Thank you for the web site I don't think its for me though. I look at how much it would cost for 1 bag of 20 small rats and it came to $54.36 after shipping thats more then I pay at the pet store.

if you buy in bulk, you should deffinately buy IN BULK. i buy months worth of frozen thawed food at once just to get my money's worth on the shipping. it will last if kept frozen for at least a year, maybe longer. and id reccomend getting bags of diff sized things. for when she (or he) grows. it may sem like a large amount of money right now, but it certainly pays off inthe long run when you can go months without buying reptile food
which is why they are so easy to care for.Danni |

I agree. Buying in bulk is the way to go. It will cost you about the same shipping for 4 bags of feeders as it does one. However it does tie up your freezer space and if you only have one or two snakes it may not really be worth the effort.
Some people also don't care much for the idea of having to move the rat-cicles to get to the ice cream! ![]()
