My New Boa
Hello everyone, it's been awhile! I got my cdls and have been driving over the road. Anyway, I ran across this little guy on craigslist, listed as a RED TAIL Boa. Nevertheless, for under a hundred dollars, I got a tank, a day and night lamp, and the boa. I pretty much stole him. I've always wanted a boa, there is something about the shape of their head I like. He's more active than my ball python.
Thanks for looking.

Re: My New Boa
Im not used to such a young snake. My ball came fully grown and I dont believe he gotten longer just fatter. Having said that my ball elvis roams the cage from the humid hide to the hollowed out tree stump. Every now and then he'll even poke his head out to see whats going on out in the world. Which is where I get confused with the boa. He came with the cage he was being housed in, all I did was add a water dish and an under tank heater. He burrows in the aspen shavings and thats it. The only time I get to see him is when I dig through to find him to show him off. The previous owner told me that while feeding he has struck the glass if he hasnt swallowed the pinky rat yet. But hes never been jumpy around me, he is also very active when out of his cage,he is always looking to get down. So what kind of mannerisms should I expect from such a young snake.

Re: My New Boa
Most young snakes are a touch nervous. As they grow they get more confident. And the hiding out thing is normal.
I've never heard of a snake striking the glass while swallowing.

Re: My New Boa
Not while swallowing, he'll drop the pinky and strike the glass

Re: My New Boa
That sounds like something was spooking him. Dropping food and striking is a defensive behavior.

Re: My New Boa
Roxy, my boa, struck the glass a few times when I first got her. I think she was just jumpy because of the new environment. Maybe it was the shadow of the ceiling fan or the smell of all the other animals. Who knows. She hasn't done it since but I worried about it. He'll probably settle down once he's adjusted.
