Identificaton Red-Tail

Hello,

I have all sorts of snakes running around my house, but felt the need to experience something 'new'.

So I decided to get a B.C.

Suddenly a couple calls me up and tells me that have a Red Tail that they need to get rid of because it just goes on and on biting.

I'm ok with the biting and all, but this just doesn't seem to be a red-tail to me:

I remind you all, that asides from books and general literature, I have never had personal experience with B.C.I.s so what might seem like an obvious answer to you guys will always be a surprise to me.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Identificaton Red-Tail

It's very difficult to distinguish a "true" redtail from one being called a redtail. The only 100% accurate method for distinguishing the 2, to my knowledge, is with a blood test. Most don't bother with that and are happy with what they have regardless.

This article however may help you make your own choice as to what you believe you have.

Re: Identificaton Red-Tail

Rich just about said it all, the link is good though I will side against the author who states "All Colombian Boas are Common Boas,..." this statment is just outright false Colombia is the only country were both boa constrictor constrictor and boa constrictor imperator are found. One other though not 100% acurate in the case of mixed breed boas but 100% in pure boas is to count the dorsal scale pairs boa constrictor constrictor have over 80 pairs boa constrictor imperator have between 65-72 based on whos speices account your going by.

Re: Identificaton Red-Tail

Very nice snake. I would have to say a common boa. True redtails are more vibrant in color. There really is know way to tell the country of origin,,,,,unless of course you capture it there.
