Pictures and Questions

Hi All,

As promised, here are some pictures of our new Suriname Red Tail. Her name is yet to be determined...such a beautiful animal deserves a beautiful name.

I've also attached a picture of her environment set up. We've got 1 large hide cave on the warm side with a vine for her to bask/climb on, one small hide cave on the cool side with her water dish and a big log. Do you think it's too crowded in there?

Our room temperature fluxuates, but it can get pretty cool at times. Her tank generaly stays between 88 - 92 F on the warm side and 75 - 82 on the cool side. We have one 100 W basking light on the warm side, a flourescent UVB/UVA light, and a 60 W ceramic heat bulb on the cool side during the day. At night we turn it all off and have a 75 W infared heat bulb on the warm side. I have read a ton of care sheets about the temperature but I just want to know what other snake owners think. Should it be warmer?

I had a beautiful iguana for many years, but this is our first snake so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Pictures and Questions

Thanks for the response. The humidity ranges from 45 to 60. We were told to spray her tank once a day and the humidity would be fine.
She ate a live rat pup last week at the store, but we haven't fed her yet. The guy told us to wait until next week to feed her and try her on a frozen rat pup. She is just shy of 2 feet. You think the temperature is too cold?

Re: Pictures and Questions

Well I think you are doing fine with the snake, but I belive that you may need more hot and humidity, the light you are providing is very good but the night one is not that necessary, instead of that you may want to use a heat pad inside the substrate by the way, what kind of substrate do you have??? I have had very good experiences putting heating pads under the substrate and that is good enough for the night, of curse you can shut it off if it is not to cold in the room were she is, also you may want to put a lot of vegetation lost of branches with leaves that will make her fell way much better because she is going to have more places to hide and hunt, she can regulate her body temperature by herself by doing this, also you can keep an aye in the humidity of the substrate looking for bacterial o fungal growing, so you may want to rinse the cage a couple more times a day or you can buy a humidity system.
About the feeding you may want to try with live prey items, like baby mouse or rats, tha is better for them, but you make sure tha she eats them otherwise you will have to removethem and feed them leatter, when she feels hungry,, if you are going to feed her with frozen food, just make sure to warm it up before you feed her, just make sure that the food was healty before the sacrifice,, looks that you are doing really fine, just keep looking for her.

Good luck

Re: Pictures and Questions

hooo I forgot, the water is very important, you may want to add a water bowl, big and deep enough so she can geth in it an drink, but you will have to change it more often, by the way she is going to grow very big and heavy, and if you have the right conditions itīs going to be very fast.
so good luck, an take care

Re: Pictures and Questions

I disagree with feeding live prey. Frozen thawed is the way to go...much safer for the snake...please dont feed live prey....and I also disagree with a heating pad in the substrate...that is a fire hazard...do not EVER put a heating pad in the substrate. under the tank is fine but NOT in the substrate. You mentioned a UVB bulb. While it wont necessarily hurt the snake, it is not necessary to have one. Boas are nocturnal and do not require UVB lighting...also making sure the water bowl is big enough for the boa to get completely inside of it is a necessity for shedding.....Your set up is very nice....what size tank is it? Hope this helps you out....best wishes!!

Re: Pictures and Questions

Your warm spot could go up a couple of degrees. I'd shoot for about 95. And I would do away with the red light and just use the heat emitter.

I am hoping that you mean the heat is under the tank on the outside. Putting a heat pad under the substrate inside the tank is a serious fire hazard!

You are mistaken. There is no reason to feed live if the snake will take prekilled or F/T. Unless the rodents have been laying around in a freezer for a very long time they are just as nutritionally adequate as live and they can't hurt your snake.

She's pretty! I agree with Merlin go with f/t not live. Our Mustache has wounds from the previous owner feeding her live and the rat fought back.
