Eye Shed

I was at a home and garden show today, and one of the pest control vendors had three boas on display. I noticed that one of them had retained shed on its eyes.

I told him that I'd find out from you guys what he can do to remove it and avoid it.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Eye Shed

sounds like a humidity issue to me, but I could be wrong. What I would do is to put the snake in a damp pillow case for the night, if that does not work and he is not experienced enough to try to take it off himself, I would call a vet.

Re: Eye Shed

Nicole has the right suggestion, but here's the step by step. $Take a hand towel and wet it with warm water,
wring it out well so it's just damp, not dripping.
Put the snake in the towel and then in a pillowcase tied shut
Put the whole thing inside the snake's enclosure over night.
As the snake moves to get out of the towel and pillowcase the warm damp cloth will gently rub off any old skin.

The next time his snake is in a shed cycle, he should really watch the humidity: give it a large-soaking bowl, mist the snake and enclosure several times a day, and set up a moist hide.

Re: Eye Shed

I usually add one more step. I make sure the pillow case is set over the Under Tank Heater. Those damp bags get cold for a snake and the added warmth will help the shed become even more supple.

Re: Eye Shed

i have heard of just water soaking work. soak the snake for awhile (skin softens... um... unexpectedly fast). then use a qtip and gently remove the eye cap. the eye is covered by a new scale so it will be ok but will deform if you use too much pressure (ie. dont worry about scratching, but worry about discomfort from pressure). i have heard of this working (btw, its important to do SOMETHING because excessive cap retention can damage the eye)
