Constipation?

OK. I have it in my head that if Roxy eats she should deficate and urinate. I fed her 2 rats which I think were too small. She is 7 1/2 feet and the rats were approximately 6-7 inches long including the tail. She did nothing. She did shed a beautiful skin. She is still quite active. I'm thinking she is still hungry. After she ate she was only still for about about 24 hours. Should I expect her to have bowel and urinary functions after every meal? P.S. At the time those were the only rats they had.

Re: Constipation?

Boas and pythons have a very slow digestive system.
It may take a week or two after feeding for it to pass.

Re: Constipation?

As far as what I'm seeing it seems ok that your boa hasn't passed anything. I don't know if it's normal since this is the first snake I've ever had but our classroom boa has only defecated once after it's first shed. She has now eaten 8 small rats (2 at a time until they are gone) and has not defecated yet.

Re: Constipation?

OMG! I have to be patient. That is so against my nature. I will admit, heck, if I can't be honest with you folks who is gonna help me, I have read "The Dumbest Things I have Heard About Snakes". I do believe that I was one of those people. Some thing came out of that snake's rear end many years ago and it wasn't hugs and kisses. I will follow Roxy's lead and if she is froggy, (no pun intended for our frog friends) I will let her out and trust that I won't be her human septic system. Yes? No?

Re: Constipation?

We leave Mustache in her cage for 2 days after eating and then she is out daily. She climbs around on me, the kids, the easel, etc. So far we've not been her septic system!

Re: Constipation?

The only snakes I have ever had let go on me were youngsters who weren't quite used to me.
Once you get used to the snake you wil be able to tell if it is close to fixing to go. The area down close to the vent will look and feel a bit fuller. And simply filling the bathtub with warmish water and allowing the snake to swim will encourage them to go.
Just clean and disinfect the tub afterwards!

exactly!!!!
my older snake (who is a corn btw, but still) takes at least a week to digest. in fact, i am not convinced that they dont pass the "time before" meal. meaning the feces you see is from 2 feedings ago. this is because i have (after a vacation) handled my corn and had him pass over 9 days later. activity is a huge indicator with snakes (unfortunalty, other herps should be abserved by defication...... but in soviet snake, metabolism control you! lol) i personally think u are ok..... but im not going to come down on you because my red tail boa is new to me and i am alwasy talking to a buddy who is a herp... senior? hes experienced with a wide variety anyways, and its because im freaking out about my new baby.
