Cypress is good to since it soaks up water like a sponge. Most people that I know who use it just use uncolored cypress mulch from the garden center.

Re: Bedding for the Boa
My bad, I admit I haven't changed Roxy's bedding yet. She grew up with indoor/outdoor carpeting for 6 plus years and I am hesitant to change too much on her. However, I pinky-promise to give the aspen a whirl this week at the pet store. On the plus side, she gets out a lot. By my own accord. I am finally confident enough to let her play in the grass but she never leaves my hands.

Re: Bedding for the Boa
Carpeting is fine if that is your preference. Some just use regular newspaper.

Re: Bedding for the Boa
i use reptibark (i think.... dark brown chips with a bit of soil in them....) for my boa. I do like the natural look however. but also, my snake likes to burrow and hide from time to time so i give him the opportunity since he is so small. i guess i dont know what size your snake is but u do for them pretty much whatever they want right? :P

Re: Bedding for the Boa
If your usig the reptile bark i think your using, i'd sugget changing it. That stuff is a pretty bad substrate.
Sharp edges, does'nt hold humidity, impaction risk, not to mention i've heard the stuff is like a breeding ground for mites.

Re: Bedding for the Boa
i used reptibark before and found it didnt hold moisture well ata all the aspen bedding holds moisture quite well and its easier to find messes. they can also bury themselves and i found it to be 1/6 te price to cover all my cages (more generously) as it would if i still used the reptibark but to each there own

Re: Bedding for the Boa
Yeah, sorry, should of probaly made sure that was clearer.
the reptile bark i thought you were talking about was this stuff ![]() From what i've heard that forest barks not as bad, but its still not the best stuff to use, i'd personaly change it. There are better things, that are cheaper. I Personaly love the eco earth, not everyone here is a fan of it for big boids, and it does have to be changed more often then some of the other substrates, but the stuff works great. Aspen is also a great choice, i've also heard a lot of good things from cypress mulch. Carpet is probaly the easiest to clean, but does'nt hold humidity as well, though the repticarpet does a decent job.

Re: Bedding for the Boa
EE is definitly not cheap though. i used it for my corn for over a year and finally just went to forrest bark. its so much easier to just dump a bag in there, and one big bag covers my 75 gal pretty easy. i like this stuff because the added soil seems to help maintain moisture as well as soften it up a bunch..... the only downside is my corn likes to dig around in it so each time i hold him i get a fine black dust all over me..... he ends up clean though
![]() i also just flat out refuse to do carpet unless im nursing an ill snake, or dealing with a small lizard or something like that. both of my snakes, as well as my GF's leo love digging around and burrowing in whatever they can. id hate to deny them that. My cornsnake Jack used to make tunnels in his eco earth when it was hard packed, and they all criss crossed under his water bowl, if i wanted him out id have to take out the bowl and either wait for him to come see whats going on or start poking around and shoo him out ![]()
