New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Questions.

Hey guys, how is everyone this is my first post and I am new to the community. I just have a couple questions about my new suri red tail im adding to my collection soon. My other snake is a brazilian rainbow and I know the temp and humidity for the red tail will be a lot different. First of all I have a 50 gal long for the snake, and I was wondering if I should divide it in half at the beginning or if the red tail will be okay in a tank that big. It is going to be a baby when I get her. Also what would be a good heating/ lighting setup for this tank. I was thinking about a Under Tank Heater and a heat lamp, but I'm not sure what wattage. Also since I have a screen lid for this tank im guessing I should cover about 3/4 of it with a towel or something to keep humidity in, but how often should I mist the cage and how much humidity is too much? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Re: New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Question

i don't know about humidity but as far as for heat, an under the tank heater and a heat lamp should be enough. it also depends on how hot or cold your house is. you should probably set up the tank with everything before you get the snake so you can make sure the temperatures are coming out correctly to what you'll need.

you can always divide the tank in half for now or add several hides and decoration so the tank won't seem so big.

hope that helped a little bit. i know other boa keepers will come help out with the rest and give their suggestions. good luck with the new addition!

Re: New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Question

Thank you.. Well it is usually in the mid 70's in my room, even warmer sometimes. I am in Florida so the outside temp doesnt fluctuate too much. What temps do you red tail owners try to keep, and what wattage bulb do you think would be best for my setup? Thanks again everyone

Re: New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Question

im pretty sure temp wise is the same with majority of snakes. But for my ball python and cali king I shoot for 92 on the basking side and 78 the cool side. and at night our house stays at 75 pretty solid which is the lowest you want to keep it. humidity is moderate, 50-60. basically shoot for 55 and you will be fine. I'd recomend dividing the 55 for now, with a younger snake security is essential... but still keep 2 or more hides even though its a smaller area..

Welcome to Herp Center sportwats.

Here is a caresheet on Boa Constrictors.

That can be very misleading to someone that reads it. The temperatures and humidity that any animal needs is dependant on their natural environment. A Garter Snake found in Massachusetts requires completely different temperatures and humidity compared to a Ball Python from Africa.

Location of the species, in its natural environment, depicts how it will be housed and heated in captivity.

Re: New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Question

Would you guys recommend using a Ceramic Heat Emitter or a heat lamp, I'm kind of leaning towards a heat lamp but would 100 watt bulb be good enough to provide appropriate basking temps?

Re: New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Question

The temperatures will require adjusting. If we told you that a 100 watt light would be enough, we would be guessing. The size of the enclosure, height of the enclosure, and the rooms ambient temperatures all play a role in what wattage you will need.

I personally would go with a HE from ReptileUV. They produce great heat, but if your snake ever came into contact with it, it wouldn't get burned. It also doesn't provide any light, which means it can be used at night as well if required.

That's true, I should pay attention more to my wording next time I offer advice. I could mislead someone just because of being in a rush and/or sleep depraved (which has been quite normal lately). I apologize, usually I look over my posts before submitting, but I was in a bit of a rush and cut a few corners. Now that I look back on it after you brought my attention to it, I feel pretty dumb.

Re: New Suriname Coming Soon I Have a Few Question

There is no reason to feel dumb Skeletor. I think we all have rushed through posts at one time or another and maybe posted something we didn't explicitly "mean" to post in the way it may be read or interpreted.

The beauty of a forum is that others can jump in and clarify or correct it, and all is good in the world again. lol
