Relaxing then Eating

How long of relaxation and getting used to his surroundings would you say we should give Keasby before we feed him? The guy we got him from said he fed him 3 weeks ago. Thanks

Re: Relaxing then Eating

I'd give him at least a week. It won't hurt him a bit!
3 weeks to a boa that size is nothing.

Re: Relaxing then Eating

yea 2 weeks is nothing. my rosy boa goes off food in the winter anywhere from 6-8 months.

they need to adjust first before being fed, it reduces the amount of stress.

...and regurgitations are much less likely once they've had a chance to adjust. Regurges are nasty, and best avoided

Thanks, wow 6-8 months. I would be a little freaked out. Well hopefully our wont do that right now because it would freak me out.

Re: Relaxing then Eating

freaked me out too the first year I got him and he did it during winter. but I had gotten him from a friend and when I asked he said the snake had always done it every winter. now i'm used to it and expect it around august. but this is a rosy boa and he's over 4 years old. usually young snakes don't do it, its the older ones. it would depend on the age of your snake, they usually do it when they're older if they do it at all.

and I agree with the regurges. they are nasty and foul so its much easier and recommended to give your snake plenty of time to settle in before a feed.

Re: Relaxing then Eating

Thanks everyone! I'll give him a while. But yeah, 6-8 months is kind of strange. Not strange that it doesn't happen, just...wow

Re: Relaxing then Eating

You have to keep in mind that reptiles have a major advantage over warm blooded animals.
A large part of the food that warm blooded animals consume is used to generate their body warmth.
Reptiles don't have to burn calories to keep their bodies warm, so they are much more efficient in using the available food as well as the fat stores in their bodies.
Therefore they are capable of surviving without food for periods of time that would kill a warmblooded creature.
Fasting for over a YEAR is not unheard of!

Re: Relaxing then Eating

Very interesting. I'm glad to be so well informed now. I won't be concerned if he turns down food in a couple of weeks, then.
