I have a whole roomfull of snakes and sometimes there are multiple sheds going on and other times only one. Its just the way it happens at the time.

Re: Shed Questions

I'm back with another shed question. Looking at this thread, Mustache shed sometime between Feb. 9 and Feb. 11. Today his eyes are cloudy again. If she is getting ready to shed again am I feeding her to much (med. rat) or is this typical? We don't know how old she is. She is being taken care of better than her previous owner, I believe. Just curious. She's gained .8 lbs since we've had her.

Re: Shed Questions

As they grow more quicly then they shed more often. Shedding every month is a bit odd for a snake that size but nothing to worry about. She may just be playing catch up now that she is in good conditions.

Re: Shed Questions

Mustache completed her second shed since we got her in Jan. Her wounds from being fed live rats before we got her just keep looking better as she sheds. Her color was brighter this time - especially on the face. Her skin is smooth and silky!

His temps are good this is just the first time he's hung out in his water. The snake in the other classroom (a carpet python) shedded today. Is it normal for snakes in the same area to shed at the same time. The python has been at school all year -this is his 1st shed since Aug. Mustache just came to us in Jan. It was an exciting day in the K/1 classrooms!

im new... sorry.... are you a teacher?

anywho, a snake of ur size will typically take aroudn a week to shed after going blue. good to know ur already looking for caps.

like you already said, red tail boa tend to be very ugly while going through a shed, but afterwards go right back to being as pretty as ever. from my experience they are very rough shedders (not necessarily with experience atho mine is. im meaning more in appearance). mine also does not typically hang out in his water.... but hes small (>1ft) so hes more temp tependant than larger snakes and this is probably why.

i will add, if your snake us usually dry and suddenly submerges most of his/herself u may want to keep an eye out for mites. its and ugly reality we live with, but in order to 'self clean', ive seen red tail boa's completely submerge other than a snout. with your story im doubting this, but a dirty rat from the pet store can lead to problems so keep ur eye open.

Re: Shed Questions

SpectorGT260, Yes I'm a teacher. I have a k/1 classroom. We just got Mustache in Jan. and I'm so grateful to have found this site. Never having a snake before or even a thought of having one before I've appreciated all the help I get here. Mustache soaked for a couple of days after her first shed with us but since then she hasn't been in her water dish.

Both sheds have followed the same pattern - we find her eyes cloudy on Monday morning and the next Monday we find her shed! We are keeping a chart along with our observations. Now we are waiting on her to defecate (the kids love that word).
