Feeding Question?

Since getting Mustache (red tail boa) 9 days ago, I have been reading everything I can about proper care. I keep reading that he should be feed in a different enclosure. What do you suggest? I could come up with a box or a large storage tote - not another aquarium. Also, he was feed live and received injuries from that. I'm going to work on switching him to t/f - any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Re: Feeding Question?

My boa wont eat frozen/thawed yet only live so what you can do is thunk the rat in the back of the head on the left side and this will paralize it for about 30-45 seconds, long enough for the snake to strike and constrict it so the rat cant cause any injuries to your snake.

Re: Feeding Question?

a storage tote or box would work fine for feeding, especially something with a lid, so you can leave him be for a while without having to worry about it escaping.

Re: Feeding Question?

thaw out the frozen rat, and heat it up with a hair dryer. Then wiggle it around with long tongs. Hopefully he will go after it.

And a storage tote is fine.

Re: Feeding Question?

I will try the hair dryer first and use the fresh kill as a last resort. Stupid question but.... should I drill holes in the storage tote for air?

Re: Feeding Question?

The totes are not air tight. Unless you are leaving the snake in there for hours at a time no extra ventilation is needed.

Re: Feeding Question?

thats good to hear. its definitely alot easier to feed frozen/thawed. i thought it would be alot harder to get my snakes on them but I was surprised at how easy it was. they went for them right away.

i hope he continues to eat well for you.
