Growth

I have a 2 yr old, 5 foot long redtail. I'm pretty positive it is a female. Her cage is plenty big enough. I feed her 1 medium rat/week or 2 small rats/week. Her cage temperature is always about 80-90 with a spot lamp on the 90 end. The humidity is about 70 and she sheds regularly. My concern is that I've seen many articles about 2 yr old boas that are 8 feet and 40 lbs already whereas mine is only 5 feet at the same age. Is this something to be concerned about or am I doing something wrong???
Any info would be helpful...Thanks!

Re: Growth

As long as the boa is healthy and growing don't worry too much about what you read! There are owners out there who are in such a hurry to have a big snake that they overfeed. Its known as powerfeeding and is generally frowned upon by serious keepers.
It results in enormous growth rates.
It also takes several years off of the snake's life expectancy!

By the way I have a 2 year old that is about that same size.
You are doing fine!
And welcome to HerpCenter by the way!

Re: Growth

Thanks. I've had smaller snakes before but this is my first boa. She's really fun.

Re: Growth

I wouldn't worry much about the size at this point. It doesn't sound bad, and it sounds like you're taking good care of her. My red tail boa didn't get to be 8 feet until just a couple of years ago. He is approximately 7 years old. He doesn't weigh anywhere near 40 pounds. When I first got him, he had been on a powerfeeding regimen like people do with ball pythons to make them get big fast. All it did to him was make him overfat, he had horrible stretch marks all over his body. It took a few years to fix that. My boa is very well muscled, and the vets love him.

Re: Growth

Welcome to Herp Center, I was wondering about the same thing myself about a week ago. Never owning a baby before you don't really know what to expect. I know our girl all of a sudden got big before our eyes. She is about 17 months and is close to 4'.

Who is your vet? I'm always looking for a good one; the closest for me is about 40 miles away.
