Not constricting prey?
So I fed my boa a f/t today.... Nothing out of the norm, except she didnt constrict it.... she just nuzzled it, opened her mouth, and down it went... has anyone else had this happen? Its quite odd...

Re: Not constricting prey?
Do you feed f/t? Its not on common if so. My pythons do that most of the time.

Re: Not constricting prey?
no worries,, as long as she is eating. I have had that happen. My king Arthur, never constricted his prey, he would just open his mouth like a baby bird and I would place it in there and he would do the rest.

Re: Not constricting prey?
My old rainbow boa, Talyn, used to take her time with F/T rats. She'd check out how long it was, then nudge it here and there to see if it was tender, then sloooowly open her mouth over the rats head and start to swallow.
She didn't seem to need to waste her time "killing" it again. ![]() As long as he's eating and digesting well, you don't need to worry.

Re: Not constricting prey?
my snakes don't constrict their food either. i feed frozen/thawed they just take the head and start swallowing. they used to constrict when they were babies but don't anymore.

Well Im glad shes not abnormal LOL... I always feed f/t, first time I had seen this tho... opened her mouth and down it went lol... I felt kinda bad because early in the day I was jokeing about "over kill" when they "kill" their already dead meal lol... My first thought "I hope I didnt offend her lol"

Re: Not constricting prey?
Snakes will often get used to the idea that their prey never seems to fight back. They stop constricting once they learn they don't have to (lazy
). I'll usually make them chase the dead prey around a little and then wiggle and jerk it when they strike to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Otherwise they turn into the snake version of couch potatoes If you ever do this though, just don't get bit, and don't jerk the food too much.
