Is this abusive?

The other day I was introduced to someone who told me they had a boa as well. This guy lives in his RV and keeps his boa which is about 7 feet long in a small hamper. He told me that the snake is very happy, but it didnt seem like a good set up to me. Also, he just throws food into the hamper to feed the snake and there is not enough room for the snake to spread out.

Also, there is so much marijuana smoke in this RV that it is hard to even breathe.

Re: Is this abusive?

I would advise you to contact animal control, the snake is obviously not being cared for. No one would let a puppy live in those conditions, a snake shouldn't have to either.

It's a shame how many idiots think they are fit to have pets.

Re: Is this abusive?

Please report this, these are not good conditions for this boa to live in. People seem to think snakes can be treated this way for some reason. Good luck.

Re: Is this abusive?

Let animal control know the guys a dope head, maybe they'll bring some cuffs for him. A bad situation all around.

Re: Is this abusive?

As a reptile rescuer if I was to walk into someones house, apt, RV, etc. and I was to find a snake in those living conditions I would automatically seize the animal right there on the spot no questions asked. A snake of that size needs a 6 ft long tank at the least but that is still considered on the small size. I wish I was in your jurisdiction because I would be there immediately. Where is that anyway?

Re: Is this abusive?

As a fellow rescuer,, you cannot simply walk into someones home and seize the animal, you have to be employed with someone who has the LEGAL right to come in and seize animals. I have been doing reptile rescue for years but that does not give me the right to walk into anyones home and "SEIZE" any animal. They have to willingly give you the animal or you can be charged with theft and what not. However you can and should call animal control and definately report it. Unless they give you the snake there is absolutley nothing you can do,, that is legal, I would remain a thorn in animal controls behind until something was done about it. Even if they take the snake it does not mean that they will give it to you. It all depends on the rules and regulations on snakes in that particular area.

But to answer your question,, YES,, that situation is horribly abusive and downright disgusting!

Re: Is this abusive?

Yes it is abusive. You should call authorities as stated above. But the best thing you could do if that doesn't work is try to educate the person about how to properly care for the animal because maybe they are lacking the knowledge to do so for themselves.

If the person is not willing to listen to advice try to ask them politely if you could take it off their hands (not sure how you'd do that) and try to find it a better home. It's possible that anything you try to do is going to come off as an insult to the person and that it's really hard for you to do anything about the situation.

I wish you luck! Keep us updated

Re: Is this abusive?

I know that I technically have the right personally, but if I was to walk into a home that had a snake living in those conditions I wouldn't wander far from the house and I would call the local ASPCA that I work close with and they do have the right. Sorry to make you take my statement literal but was just trying to make the statement that the animal is being abused and needs to be reported to someone.

Re: Is this abusive?

That is quite shocking.
I also think the first step should be to educate the guy.
Maybe he is just "dumb".(I don't know what else to say.)
explain to him what needs to be done and why and maybe he will then pass the animal over to you when he realizes he is doing more damage than good.

You are right on the money Mosh. Too many people consider reptiles to be somehow less important as far as humane treatment. I'm sure this is probably old news to many of you, but the incident in Ohio this past summer is a perfect illustration of the "double standard" of reptile treatment--A local herp fan who has donated countless hours entertaining and educating thousands in our area was doing a demo of his beloved Burmese Python at a festival when a child of approximately 10 years of age emerged from the crowd and exclaimed, "I hate snakes!". The child stomped on the head of the python, severing it's spinal cord and killing the animal almost instantly. An adult (supposedly the parent) grabbed the child by the hand and stated, "I can't take you anywhere." and whisked the child away through the crowd. The python owner who was busy tending to his dying pet did not see where the perpetrators escaped to and not one of the witnesses cared enough to attempt to stop the fleeing killer and parent.

My first thought was I wonder how differently the crowd would have responded if the python had been a puppy.
