Eating

With all the problems listed in my last post we just found out my male snake (the one thats sick) hasnt eaten in 3 months what do you think would be the best way to go about getting him to eat? Now that he is back in a clean cage and in a smoke free enviroment and the heat in his cage is up where it should be, should we wait any ammount of time to let him reajust? Should we feed him smaller rats then he would normaly get?

If he is sick, he may not feel like eating. You could try offering a prey a bit smaller than what he was originally eating, but most likely he will eat when hes better.

We adopted a common with an URI and it took at least a month, before she was even interested in the rat. She hadn't eaten for 2-3 weeks before we got her. Get the snake healthy and adjusted to it new environment then try feeding it. We feed the same size pray as he was getting before he got sick, the guy we got her from only feed once every two week, but we feed weekly to help put some weight on her.

My two cence

I read somewhere that dipping the pray in chicken broth is likely to entice the snake to feed.
I could help if I knew the process in which you offered the prey how do you go about enticing him to eat.

sorry I took so long to reply give the chicken broth a try.

I would wait until the end of his treatments to try getting him to eat....he most likely wont be interested in food if he is feeling poorly...I had a boa go almost a year without eating (one I am fostering) and he never had any problems and now eats like a champ....good luck!!

When we got him the first time he ate live we switched him to frozen without a problem then when we gave him to the guy who unfortunetly didn't take very good care of him he was giving him live my husband wants to do live but I want to do frozen. We were going to wait till around the 20th to feed him because he will be done with the shots and reajusted to us and our house and we have a vet apointment on the 19th for both the snakes to be checked out and run tests to make sure the are in good health. The good thing is that he has been drinking water.

I'd wait till the antibiotic treatment is close to finished or when he starts looking a bit more active. Then TRY FROZEN FIRST: just make sure the rat is completely thawed and nicely warmed up. In warm water or under a heat lamp or with a hairdryer. Live is especially dangerous if the snake is not feeling good or not interested in feeding: the "dinner" can quickly become the "diner". If you chose not to use frozen, you should offer freshly killed instead of live.
If he's taken frozen before, it hopefully won't be so difficult to switch him back and if he's REALLY hungry, he'll take it.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
