Addiction

I read on another forum when I was just looking around that snakes... well they said corns but I think it was more of a general thing... that if you start feeding them Hamsters or Gerbils they form a sorta addiction to them and will start to refuse other foods. Is this true? i wouldnt think so but then again I dont have any proof for either

In most cases snakes are oppotunistic feeders, I have tried using different color mice as tests, but it doesn't seem to matter, when they get hungry they will eat whatever is available. Unless they are specialized eaters (the eastern hognose lives on toads in the wild and is hard to convert) I don't believe there is a food addiction.

I've never heard of an addiction in reptiles. As Jay stated, many are atypical of a certain food and have to be "tricked" to get them to eat anything else. I beleive some Rosy Boas eat lizards when young and are difficult to change to rodents,,,,you actually have to rub lizard blood and scent on the rodent to get it to eat !!!!

Good way to be, I say. Always a good idea to question things before valuing them. It's how you become more of a sharp individual.

Yeah, my garters normally would only eat fish, % C and amphibians. To get them to eat mice I rub the mice on one of my leopard frogs to give them that froggy smell. The snakes don't know the difference after that

I beleive what you are thinking of is Ball pythons and feeding them gerbils. In the wild BPs feed on gerboas which are very similar to our commercially available gerbil. I have heard of several people that once they got them feeding on gerbils (usually trying to break a fast) The snake would not eat anything but gerbils.
A very costly prey item I might add!
I have never heard of colubrids having this problem. Probably because they aren't picky like the ball pythons
