casting concrete

Has anyone here ever had good results casting concrete into anything more than say a fence post or flagpole base?

I am thinking about making some large planter boxes. Call them 36"x36" and 18 to 24" tall. Dyed concrete seems like it could be a great option and only come out to about $15 a planter.

I know that some of you may say use plastic pre-made ones but I want more mass and strength than plastic offers. One use for these will be out in my front yard along the side walk partly for looks partly to absorb impacts. My porch has been removed by cars twice (not while I have lived here) and all the trees along this road have been hit at least once.

Any thoughts?

Re: casting concrete

I've never done it personally, but I've seen large concrete planters. We have a lot of statuary dealers here, and all the benches, fountains, and yard critters are cast concrete. You may want to search for statuary molds or dealers and see what you find.
