random home improvement
Well I think next month I;ll re-plumb my house.
Anyone ever use PEX for plumbing? My neighbor did this and looks like it will be great in my house.
I have a nasty water hammer going on with my main in-house supply line and the rest of the place is a plumbing mess. Go figure it is 80 years old with plenty of additions and changes in ideas and what people wanted to do.

Re: random home improvement
The one thing my husband and I don't do is plumbing. I mean, we can handle minor things, like installing a new garbage disposal or tightening down the toilet, but thats it.
Right now my hubby is need deep in dirt digging out the foundation, so he can seal up a crack and tar it.

Man I hate plumbing. I'l tackle any reno job but me and plumbing don't get along. I always end up with a leak.

Re: random home improvement
Once you have the crimping tool this PEX looks great. Doing to plumbing what drywall did to plaster. My neighbor never worked with it until he replumbed his whole house with it in one Thursday. Took him longer with a sawz-all to remove the old pipe than place and crimp all the tube.
I just wonder how the bath tub fixture is held in. At least half of the mounting of the faucet is from the pipe connections physically holding it there.

Re: random home improvement
OK so I did it. Total re-plumbing of my house a few weeks ago. Took two days working alone.
As a note this was my first real attempt at plumbing and I was using a product which the local stores know next to nothing about.
Ran PEX for the whole thing. Only two leaks for the whole project and those happened where I tried to save a few bucks and reuse the existing laundry machine hoses. The old hoses blew out when I turned on the water. No leaks on the actual plumbing supply lines I ran.
I did cross the hot and the cold at my bath tub but realized it as soon as I finished crimping the cold on to the faucet. I had to cut that back off and re crimp it. Oh well 50 cents and 30 minutes down the drain.
I still have to take all the cast iron and copper pipe to the scrap yard.
Total price, with tools, for a one bath house (bath tub, toilet, two sinks, two outdoor sillcocks, laundry tub and washer, and a dish washer) less than $300. I still have about $100 of pipe on the floor to sell as scrap so that would knock me down to about $200.

Re: random home improvement
Awesome. That's a pretty cheap replumbing job. I'll have to keep that product in mind when I redo my bathroom.

Re: random home improvement
I only know two things about plumbing:
1. Don't eat with your hands.
2. **** rolls down hill.
That's more than enough!
I'm glad it went well, Mark!

Re: random home improvement
Yeah recycle that pipe! Phil (my boyfriend) is an electrician and he makes about $300/month just recycling copper junk wire.
