Re: random home improvement
Yeah where Phil is working now is in a very poor community and they steal the copper wire as fast as the electricians can put it out. They allowed them to take the junk wire at first but since they started stealing everything they are now under tight security.

Re: random home improvement
across the nation copper is being ripped out of buildings because of the cost.
Aluminum too. I hung gutters and siding in St Louis for a summer. One job had me break aluminum facia around the front of a garage while my co worker hung vinyl siding on the other sides of the building. Next day we show up and all the aluminum trim coil I broke had been ripped off the garage. The PEX tube costs, at a big box so your looking at top dollar retail, 26 cents a foot and is sold in 100' rolls but you can get as long a 500' from plumbing supplies. The stuff is flexable so you don't have any elbows or Tees in line so fewer places for leaks. I used central manifolds (1 hot, 1 cold) with each home run having a shutoff valve at the fixture and at the manifold. I used a barbed fitting with a copper crimp ring type fitting. The crimper is the most expensive part -- The Pex Pocket Crimper- For permanent crimp connections with PEX tubing fittings

Re: random home improvement
every once in a while, someone comes along and asks my parents to sell their copper gutters and offers a pretty penny. They never will since they compliment the house so much. In fact THEY spent a pretty penny replacing one that got destroyed by a tree.
