Great stuff Donna! Many books or magazines will say that some lizards are not physically able or will not drink from a water source such as a bowl, but it is not that they can't. Most won't just because they it's not natural instinct to drink from a bowl.. most will drink if spritzed or will drink from trees or leaves (don't spray your cham directly), some however will drink from a bowl. A lot of our bearded dragon hatchlings drink from their water bowl, which is funny because the last magazine that I read said "most bearded dragons cannot physically drink from a water bowl".. ours must be super lizards then!

I think I've seen just about al of my lizards drink from a bowl at on time or another. I usually put an ice cube on the screen above their water bowl and let it melt. The dripping water seems to make them curious.

I think its like the engineers that say a bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly.
Neither the bees nor the herps bothered to read the darned book!

A couple things:
I've never heard that you shouldn't spray your cham directly. Just don't do it really quickly. Just calmy mist him. Often they'll run away but usually they'll run for a little while and then stop and drink. Make sure the water is warm.
That leads me to my second point. I wouldn't use the ice cube trick because the water coming from it is cold. If I were you, I would just use a paper cup with a hole punched in the bottom.

I just read a piece from a website here goes
Quote:
|
Chameleons rarely drink from standing water. Drip and mist systems are a must. If your chameleon is drinking too readily from a bowl it is usually a sign that he is dying a slow death from “chronic suboptimal hydration”
|
What do you guys think? it goes on about misting is a must too, which I do quite often every day, and I keep a damp towel in the day, on top of his cage to help with humidity, which seems to be working as he has just shed and it went great. he is a nice bright green colour now.

What do your humidity measurements read Donna? If they read 60-70% you are fine, and if your cham is drinking from mistings then he should be fine. How much does your cham drink? He will also get moisture from the food items that he eats.

He hasnt used the fountain since that day, not that I have seen anyway, but them fountains are supposed to Stimulate natural drinking behavior in lizards (ex. chameleons) so I am wondering why he went to it, unless there was something in there, a feeder maybe, I havent measured humidity so I dont know, will check 2moro, but I am sure its fine, but only a reading will tell for sure, he is eating well apart from the crix he just wont entertain them, all I can get him to eat are waxworms and locust,
