Different opinions on cham enclosure
I just been to a pet shop and they advised me against the mesh enclosure, as these are only ok if you live in the hotter countries, and that they have bred chameleons and every single one has lived in a glass enclosure, im totally confused now, I know the reasons behind not housing a cham in a glass enclosure, and the guy at the pet store didnt agree, he said all his chams have lived happy lives in glass homes, he said I prob wont be able to keep temps up in the winter months. he didnt seem to think I done the right thing moving him from his enclosure hes been brought up in, as that would stress him more
I need some reasurance now guys, have I done the right thing in moving my cham to the mesh enclosure? |

Everytime I've seen a cham under responsible ownership it was ALWAYS in a mesh enclosure. The glass keeps the humidity too high which leads to resp. trach infections, right?
If hes the only one whos recommended glass then just nod your head like your listening as it goes in one ear and out the other. It should not be too hard to keep the heat up during the cooler months, no easier than if it was in glass. |

You actually summed it all up with "this guy at the pet shop said...blah blah blah". You did your research and you know what's right.

pet shop employees rarely have the animals best interest in play. It usually is the sale. There are exceptions as some members of this site work in the field and are honest. It is always best to get a second opinion whether from this site, a book, another website or an experienced keeper

I dont even know why I listened to this guy, he had a corn snake housed with a ball python, and when I quized him about it, he said they are ok as they are both big snakes, meaning they where where similar in size, i just looked in amazement.

He's clueless. Both require different heating, lighting and humidity. If I were you that would be my last visit to that establishment

Donna, don't worry - mesh enclosures are designed for chams. Although they need high humidity, it doesn't need to be as high as some think (around 60%) so as chronic said, a glass enclosure can mean the humidity can get too high. Keeping chams in a glass enclosure can also stress them out due them being able to see their reflection - chams need to be housed alone, apart from when mating is taking place, and even seeing a reflection can cause stress which can lead to your cham becoming ill.
To be honest this guy sounds like an idiot - to start with his chams are being kept wrong, and secondly a ball python and a corn?!?!?? - i personally would report him but that's my two cents. People like that do not deserve to be in this business - they promote the mistreatment of animals, and are contributing to why the RSPCA want to ban us keeping reptiles over here. I would go back and tell him some home truths. Perhaps we can pay you a visit in a couple of weeks and come with you - people like that make me so angry. |
