Diggin' Cham

My little girl is a Veiled and is about 1 year old now, and we noticed today she was trying to "dig" under her log even though there is nothing there for her to dig into. We have noticed before that she walked around on the bottom before and this was a way to tell whether she had eggs even though she isn't mating...yet. We have taken her out and put her in a bucket with coconut husk-soil stuff just in case she needs somewhere to put them if she indeed does have eggs, but I was wondering if anyone knows if this could just be a pasttime thing for them....any suggestions would be helpful

Well, I was right, we left her all night to dig, and there were 48 eggs to show for it this morning. My only wish is that I had mated her to make this all worth while. Mating her will be next. One question though, when we went in to see her, she had everything all covered up like we were expecting, so we took her out and put her back in her cage, when we did this, she let out another egg. I was wondering if she will still let more go even though it looked like she was done or if this was a left over that she didn't really know about?

Congrats on the eggs!, shame they weren't fertile, but hopefully you can mate her and produce some good eggs sometime in the near future.

Re. the extra egg, leave her lay box in the tank, since there is no rush to remove the eggs, and let her finish off in her own time, and just leave her be to rest and recooperate after that. One of our bearded dragons has occasionally dropped an egg after we have moved her, thinking she has finished. Best to leave her til she moves away, as sometimes removing them, or making them unhappy about laying eggs, can result in egg-binding.

Also, infertile eggs can be harder to lay so you may find the extra one here and there. Give her a day to relax and then feed her back up, she will have lost a lot of energy and nutrients by producing eggs.

Good luck, and hope you have a successful breed next time,

LOL that's quite a difference! Well I would definately say just best to leave her if she is still going. She'll get them all out eventually, all you need to do is be on hand with some big juicy insects when she's done

well done charmed, my yemen laid a clutch of 56 a month or so back, but we mated her late, she has just come out of her breeding colours, and had a successful mate, and hope her next clutch to be fertile. Also, next time when she is very fat, and very active, make sure you have a laying box, as sometimes if they dont have ideal laying substrate, it can cause them to delay the birth of the eggs. Also, the laying box makes it easier for her.
Cheers,
Ian
