Sick Chameleon Possibly MBD Help

Hi I bought two montium chameleons (mountain chameleons, sailfin chameleons) 3 days ago from a reptile convention nearby. I bought a girl and a boy they are young and small but at the age where they can reproduce cause my girl laid eggs yesterday.

Yes they are in the same enclosure I know this is highly discouraged, but it is big enough so that they both have their space and they are known to be a pretty gentle species so I don't think thats the problem.

Either way - the problem is with my male Gomez. He displays nothing but dark green colors, ive never seen him do any other color except ONCE he blended in with a brown vine he was on, but only once, and to this day he just stays the same puke green no matter where he is. When he first came home with me he was much less active right from the start than my female. He did hunt and eat a cricket the first day and he looked pretty good the first day.

Day 2 and he is very sleepy all the time. He moves around very little and keeps his eyes closed a lot. Now I did not water him a lot on the first day because I did not know how he was supposed to drink so I thought he might be dehydrated. To fix this I gave him lots of water and he drank A LOT. He appeared to be better and was once again moving around his vines with Miss Lopez (the female).

Day 3, i come home from work and he is on the ground in his enclosure which made me nervous right away. I notice he has his face on the actual ground and his feet on a log and he has his eyes closed and isnt moving, i thought he was dead. Once I opened the glass up though he opened his eyes and moved a little. I was relieved at first but then realized he was very sick.

He has been having trouble moving around. When he walks, his hand legs grab his front legs for some reason impeding his walking and climbing abilities. Also his grip is not what it was the first day he came home with me he feels weaker. He climbs much less and is very timid about climbing now ive noticed. He can still do it and everything but im always nervous that he will fall because he wobbles and is definately unsure of himself. He moves around very little even when held. I tried holding him, he moved around a little and fell off my arm onto my lap. I put him back in on his vine and he just stayed still and closed one eye which looks a tiny bit swollen (he closes this eye a lot). And thats basically what he does now. He moves very little and just chills in one spot a lot no matter what. He is definately alert because he is always looking around with at least one eye open, but when he moves he is very unstable.

Not sure how big the cage is exactly but its definately big enough. I have only had them a few days and have not had a chance to build the proper habitat for their species (montium) which is densley shrubbed, incredibly humid, and moderate temp. Right now the temp is about right, but the humidity definately is not up to par. Their substrate might not be good for them its more snake and spider based and also I have not yet had a chance to densely plant their environ, but there are plants and vines. They have very good airflow via screen. They are getting enough water and food.

The thing that makes me think its a disease and not an environ issue though is that my female is doing great. She laid 7 eggs the other day, I'm pretty sure her and Gomez boned today, and she has been eating and drinking like crazy.

I am going to call a vet tomorrow, but if this behavior sounds familiar to anyone please help I am very concerned about Gomez.

Re: Sick Chameleon Possibly MBD Help

what do you have for UVB?
What is your humidity?
What about temps? (you say they are "right" but what are they?)

Humidity is VERY VERY VERY important for these guys. So are hiding spots. If you need to, mist multiple times a day.

You also said you have only had them a few days? He could also be settling in, but make sure your husbandry is correct.

It sounds to me like the cham is incredibly stressed and most likely very ill.
You need to have it seem by an experienced herp vet ASAP!

Re: Sick Chameleon Possibly MBD Help

Since you haven't had them very long your environment wouldn't be causing this. Many Chams are kept on the brink of death because of not being properly hydrated. Since he drank heavily might be an indication of this.
At this point the outlook doesn't look good. If he has been dehydrated for an extended period of time with the previous order. It could have caused any number of health issues. Immediate vet visit is in order as stated.
