bubbas laid eggs!!

hi

im actually bubbas grandma ha ha!! my 14 yr old has a mediterrean chameleon who we love lots, we bought her thinking she was a HE!! until now and she has laid eggs......we thought he was just getting fat due to the amount of fresh live pinhead crickets we were catching!!!!!

been given advice to leave the eggs in the tank, but also on reading on the internet it looks better to take eggs out and incubate them....anyone any advice please!!

we live in Cyprus

Re: bubbas laid eggs!!

How long have you had her? The eggs may not be fertile is it's been a while since she was in contact with a male.

Re: bubbas laid eggs!!

Here's a quote from adcham.com
Reproduction, Breeding and Incubation C. chamaeleon lays eggs 45 to 60 days after mating. Mating occurs from mid July to mid September in the northern hemisphere. They usually lay only one clutch per year. The clutch is laid sometime from the end of September to the first of November. Hatching occurs after incubating on moist vermiculite at 72 to 74ºF. for 200 to 290 days. (For instance, in one clutch the first hatched at 253 days and the last at 294. In a second clutch, the first hatched at 260 days and the last at 282 days.) In the author's experience, a clutch can consist of 6 to 20 eggs but according to P. Necas (1999), 3 to 66 eggs may be laid per clutch. Hatchlings are 2 to 3 inches long (total length).

we have had her 2 months so she must have had sex before we got her, we went to see snake george in pafos today and he said we should just leave eggs in the tank.

Re: bubbas laid eggs!!

Really? That's kind of bizarre to do that. Where are the eggs? Are they in some sort of substrate or?

Re: bubbas laid eggs!!

Something you should keep a close eye on, is her health. Since you thought she was a male I'm assuming you didn't have a egg-laying chamber set up. Chams can be picky on where they lay their eggs. Because of this they often hold their eggs too long thus endangering their health. I lost a Cham this way so I know from experience. Make sure she's drinking lots as well. If not get her to a vet.

Re: bubbas laid eggs!!

bubba has covered the eggs with the bark/straw she was sitting on them but now just sitting up on one of the logs in the tank, because we have a tiled floor we thought it may be too cold with the tank being glass.
