Re: sick panther chameleon
well, before you put him to sleep, get him under the UV light for a while. Take him out into the sun (as long as it isn't too hot). Are you feeding him crickets? When you feed him, put your crickets in a ziplock bag with a little bit of calucium/vitamin powder (you can get this at petsmart) and do a little shaking to coat the crickets. This will help as well. If you DO take him to the vet (which you should) try and take him to a reptile specialist. Most doggie/kittie vets don't know enough to really be of help. It really shouldn't be that expensive. Maybe $35 for the visit and not much more for a shot.
Keep him in the small cage for now.

Re: sick panther chameleon
yeah ive been putting him in the sun for a good hour everyday. his been out there for about an hour and half today. he seems to love it. i out him in top of the cage and he turns all his brite oranges and greens. than when I bring him back in he turns his dull dark colors. what do all the colors mean???? and today he pooped and it was brown with orange at the end. do u no what that means??? yeah ive been pulling off legs on the crickets when hes on top of the cage and he only eats like one or two. but I took the legs off so they were easier for him to get at. yeah I might give him a couple of days and see how he turns out. but most of the vets I called charged 45 for the visit and im sure they want to do xrays and thats another 60. i kinda want to try and make him better myself. i want to get a hold of some phoenix worms. i heard those are the best for calcium.

Re: sick panther chameleon
The dark colors of a cham tell you a few things one they need more heat and use the dark coloring to absorb it. Two the cham is sick. From the sound of what you say I feel you problem is very basic. What you really need it a good UV light along with keeping the temps up just a bit higher.
I've grown quite apposed to screen caging I've had larger chams lose toe nails due to climbing the mesh. I feel in a normal room it lets too much heat ecape. I've found most chams do best in a cage with a full wire mesh top of 1/4" squares. It alows proper air flow with out leting too much heat escape. A fan can be added if needed.

Re: sick panther chameleon
After you have him with a UV lamp for a day or two you should see a complete change in behavior. You really wouln't beleve the diffrence lighting can make in the behavior of a reptile, even the diffrence in sunlight and UV lamps is great. Chams are very sensitive to the light, they have under an organ under the skin on the top of the head that gives them information on light intensity and length. I would also only use the powder every 2-3 days. It's really not good to over do it.

Re: sick panther chameleon
you should try and syringe feed him calcium by mixing the calcium powder with water and syringing it into his mouth......when my chameleon was sick and had similar symptoms of yours that brought him right back to life after a ay or 2 ......but that might not be the case with yours just a suggestion

Re: sick panther chameleon
you dont need much calcium enough to coat the crickets and put them in the cage.......i would try to syringe feed him calcium and water by mixing them......pedylite I would hold off on it for now ..........pedylite enhances the movement and activity of the chameleon .....i think if you give him more calcium and keep him under a good uvb light you will see great improvement .......im not sure what the calcium drug you can get over the counter because that may do even more harm to him

Re: sick panther chameleon
OK, I should have read this thread first. Sorry for repeating questions already asked. But have you read the care sheet on this site yet? Read as many care sheets as you can find on the net! One is Melissa Kaplan's herp care sheets. It is a good one in my opinion. But research, research, research! It's not always a good idea to throw a question out on a forum without taking it with a little salt. The person answering "might" not really know what they're talking about.
