First off, what kind of cham is it? They stress very easy. What is the enclosure do you have it in, temps furniture. etc.

i am guessing you meant a cham? Firstly what species...husbandry is fairly varied on chameleons. If it is black at all times it is not a good sign. Let him have privacy and keep handling to a minimum...
i am guessing it is a veild Veiled Chameleon Caresheet care sheet should provide most info. impulse purchases of chams are always a mistake but haha now you have one. Try get his setup going quickly! chams do not do well with stress |

He is in a 10 gallon right now, we now have a 29 and cleaning and setting that up for him...but that is just temp. as well. come monday we hope to go and pick up a tank and stand that a man was using for his but his kids lost interest in him and sold him and is selling the tank and everything. He raised a cham in there for 8 years. He has everything any boy says we need. I don't have temps or anything yet. He seems to be doing fine. seems a little more stressed in the tank then outside.
![]() There he is. He is very STRONG! He is eating and drinking great. How does he look? |

well to me he looks skinny and dehydrated. A 10 gallon is very very very small! you need a large setup for a cham that size. It looks to me like it is a flapnecked chameleon(chamaeleo dilepis)...but has no white markings on the side????
in a tanks so small and glass....he will see his reflection and also feel enclosed and stressed out. There will also be no place for him to hide and feel secure among the foliage. put him on a potted plant and watch him in the shower on veery luke warm water. He should sit and chill lapping up the water. Do this for like 30 min and then repeat tommorrow...see how he looks then what species did they say he is? a flap neck? |

Hello...He will be in a 29 would it be better if we covered 3 of the sides with like a blanket so he can't see his reflection...we have many plants in there and a vine and a water drip. We don't not have a uvb light yet but will within a day or so...And as soon as my boyfriend gets here today I will. what kind of plants an be put in the tank with them...

well it should be ok without the blankets...mesh setups are much better for chams tho. haha and cheaper and easy to make. Still...what species were you told he is? Try give him that shower to hydrate the fella...see if it helps make him look more healthy...it works wonders.

Hello,
Glass enclosures are NOT good for chameleons. That alone is going to stress him out.(Even with blankets, there will be reflections. Not to mention the blankets will STILL make him feel trapped.) Glass enclosures, even with a complete screen lid are not going to allow for proper ventilation. Chams require the screen enclosures for several reasons, 2 of which are listed above. I can understand that he grabbed the Cham on impulse. That happens to the best of us. Now though, you need to go out and buy all of the equipment to set the cham up properly. That includes: A large mesh enclosure like this: (Example Link) A UVB Light: (Example Link) Dripper System: (Example Link) Live and fake plants are both ok for a cham. A live plant hanging within the screen enclosure is best. The dripper will keep it watered and it will help keep the humidity higher. (All screen enclosures are tough to keep humidity up in, but they need it.) Knowing the type of Chameleon you have is essential. All chams require different things to thrive. There isn't a blanket caresheet that covers all chams. |
