Lighting?
Hey all! I just have a question about the lighting in the terrarium for my cham! I have an exo-terry 100w Neodymium light and am going to buy an exo-terry repti-glo 5.0... can I mix the two? Will that create too much UVA? Thanks!

The Repti Glo is a UVB light right? It needs to be a UVB light, however, UVB's automatically give off UVA as well. Two bulbs giving off UVA shouldn't be a problem though. They don't absorb it or anything. They can see into that spectrum, that's all. Without UVA things look the wrong colors to them and that gets stressful when things don't look the way they're supposed to. Now they can get too much UVB, but in captivity that's pretty hard to achieve with a flourescent light.

Thanks! You've been a real help! I bought a bush for him in his cage... he seems to dig it! and I built a dripper out of a rinsed "I can't believe it's not butter" thing and some aquarium air tubing... and I'm going right now to get the Reptiglo UVB light! he seems to be doing very well... he's eating his dusted crickets... drinking... walkin' around!! I hope he stays well!! Thanks again Furryscaly!

Just make sure you remember that the UVB can only project up to 12 inches from the bulb, so the cham has to be able to get at least that close to it. It also will need to be replaced every 6 months because they eventually can't produce enough UVB. And also keep in mind that the UVB can't pass through solids, like glass and plastic. With the addition of a UVB light he'll be able to take in the calcium from his calcium supplement and with his diet of insects you shuold get a good calcium to phosphorous ratio if your cal supplement is phos free. Hope he stays healthy for ya! Keep us all posted on his progress and post some pictures if you ever can!

Before you go out and buy another "ordinary" UVB lamp, please take a look at the newest member of the Mega-Ray family: Mega-Ray-Low, designed specifically for chameleons.

The megaray sounds pretty awesome... but, I already bought a reptisun 5.0... and an 8 dollar flourescent light fixture for it! 8 bucks is pretty good eh?! He's in a temporary terrarium so... I'm in the process of building him a 6'x3'x3'... With his tail fully extended he's about 1 1/2 ft... Yeah.. I can't wait to finish it!

Well, then simply wait the six months for the Reptisun 5.0 tube's UVB to run out and then buy the Mega-Ray.

Heh heh, yeah, I'll do that. Say... do I have to replace the megaray once a year?

Yeah, I'd get the Megaray when your fluorescent needs replacing. No, you don't need to replace it till the bulb dies, so they're a lot cheaper than using fluorescents in the long run. I recommend MVs for larger cages, like th one your cham will be in, cause they can project the UVB much further than a fluorescent.

Right right... how much do you think it would cost (energy-wise) to keep the megaray?
