He could have got the bird, but my son was not going to let that happen. He kept chasing the bird away but he just kept coming back.

That looks like a mocking bird.
It looks like there may be a nest nearby and it was trying to lure the snake away from it.
There is usually a reason to what to us appears to be madness.
