Should I take her? I need some opinions...

OK. here goes... A guy I know is moving out of town and can't take his female Albino Burmese with him. He asked me to take her for him. the thing is, that she's 16+ feet long, and I don't curently have an extra room for her. I really don't want to see her go to someone who doesn't know how to take good care of her. What do you think??? I'm looking for your opinions.

Re: Should I take her? I need some opinions...

Have you ever had a 16 foot snake? can you properly house her in her own room? You said that you dont have a room for her, so there is probably your answer. Those are large animals that can be very dangerous,,especially if you have no real experience with them. It is his responsibility to make sure that she goes to a good home. I know that sometimes we feel bad, but in all reality if you cant do it,, you cant do it. Another thing to remember is that those are very expensive animals to feed, they are require a lot of time and care to keep them "tame". So really the decision is up to you, but make sure it is one you think long and hard about before you jump into anything that you may regret,,, and may find that you will have a hard time finding someone to take from you

I think you have answered your own question.
Thats a LOT of snake to house,..and feed,.. and clean up after.
And you may be doing it for the next 15-20 years.

I'm with Nicole on this one. It's up to the guy moving to make sure his snake goes to a good home. It's hard not to feel guilty if you say no, but you're NOT responsible for giving this snake a good home!
There's a lot of time (think decades), money (heating costs/food) and energy involved in dealing with any snake, but one that is 16+ft and probably not full-grown is a huge commitment.
Good luck with your decision. It's certainly not an easy one!

I could build a big cage for her, like I have for my Redtails. But something that large would have to be kept in my basement for sure. About how large would you all suggest a cage to be for her to be comfortable. Yes, I have other Large constrictors, and the necessary experience. This isn't some 15yr old kid posting this. haha! Seriously, I need some good opinions.
Thanks again!

From the peanut gallery here LOL
I agree with everyone that posted.
There would be NO WAY I could take a snake like that...just no room.
That owner should find a great home for it.
Dont feel guilty...

No one is Pooh-poohing your experience. However I would still say that you have to give this one some serious consideration. The snake is already bigger then your redtails will ever get.
The recommended MINIMUM size cage for an adult Burm is at least six to eight feet in length by two to four feet in width by three to four feet tall though larger enclosures are always encouraged.
The usual size for an adult Burm is 17-20 feet but there have been cases where they got much larger that.
I beleive there was a zoo in Pennsylvania that claimed theirs was 33 feet long!
You have to decide if you really want to take on a lifetime of caring for this animal. Don't do it out of some sense of guilt. Once you have it, you will most likely be stuck with it for the duration of its life. As you probably already know, adult burmese are hard to find homes for and even harder to find homes in a situation where they actually belong!

Re: Should I take her? I need some opinions...

I could definately build her a cage of that size, and probably even bigger. Heating such a large enclosure would be the only issue for me. The feeding-expense isn't an issue, as I get free feeders from a reliable source. My mother-in-law breeds rabbits and rats for me. I just buy the food for them. So, the expense of feeding her will not be a problem. The cost of keeping her isn't an issue.

Hmmm it almost sounds like you have already made up your mind.
I understand the fascination. An albino Burm is one of the things my wife would dearly love to have.
But we do not have the space nor the resources to care for something that large.

Re: Should I take her? I need some opinions...

As someone who has delt with large reptiles. You could very well build a cage for the snake the smallest I would recomend would be 9'x4'x4'. Heating is a non-issue though 2-4 heat spots or a pig blanket could be used. Though for a snake this size Large rabbits just aren't going to cut it. You'll be looking more at a small pig or sheep/goat once a month to get the job done. Storage of feeders alone will require a frige of it's own. Give some good thought to what you may be getting yourself in to.
