Princess Bell lives up to her name
I have a 2 yr old female albino burm my daughter named princess bell(beauty and the beast), bell for short and six weeks ago, she decided she didnt want to eat anymore, snubbed everything I offered her from bunnies to rats to mice (10ft snake mice I know lol) just to get her to eat... Mind you Ive only had her since august... so I really dont know her habits well... anyways she went from eating to snubbing her food I tried everything from senting to live... She seemed more interested in coming out to play, then eating her food...(like a puppy dog wanting to play) So, I went through the list of reasons snakes dont eat.... Did some research... I guess burms dont brumate.... So fecal samples off to the vet.... Snake off to the vet.... 110% healthy... The vet made a joke about her must have been treaded like a princess to be in such good health...... Temps right, humidity right... photo period right, I was about ready to put her on time out.... So, I decided tonight, Id waste the weekly frozen bunnie to see if I could get her to eat... Well thanks to some advice from a big time breeder, I decided to blow dry the bunnie after it was warm, to get it even warmer... and feed her in a completely dark room so she couldnt see me....(yea not the smartest thing.....probably asking to get bit, but hey anything for my critters) and the little (big) snot ate it! It wasnt any warmer then usual (its quite the job to get into her cage in compleat darkness)... So Princess Bell has earned her title as a princess.... Little (big) stinker... makes me laugh and mad at the same time.... Sorry just had to rant and rave with fellow herpers.... My boyfriend just thinks im nuts.....

LOL I am afraid I have to agree with him!
Entering the cage of a large constrictor in the dark with a prey item in your hand is NOT the wisest thing to do! You lucked out this time, but this story could have had a VERY unhappy ending!
Another newspaper headline of "Python Kills Owner!"
We'd REALLY prefer to keep you around a while!

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
Yea I had that weird tummy feeling while I was doing it.... But my friends do call me the crazy snake lady lol I did put it in the opposite side of the cage that what she was in... made sure to map out her enclosure before hand... I think that Im going to try to have my boyfriend feed her, because she sees me and is like Mom, oh I get to come out of my cage, but on the other hand shes in love with my boyfriend too.... Shes also one of my snakes that doesnt bother to strike and constrict prey... Here in my house, we have a safe word for playing with the big snakes(not help cause thats my daughters fave word), and we also dont do anything with them alone unless its an emergency (when I fed her last night, the boyfriend was at the bedroom door incase I needed help and a light) But when It all boils down to it, I got her to eat... And Ill do anything for my critters well being

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
what I used to do with my snakes when they didn't eat was put them in their feeding bins, put the food in then shut all lids and turned the lights off after I was done setting them all up. that way I could see what I was doing and they ate because they felt secure in the dark. i still have to do that with my rosy boa on occassion but now I know that he doesn't eat during the winter. drives me nuts but at least I know now what his problem is when he goes off in august and doesn't start again till like february lol.
being that your snake is large and I don't know whether or not you change her to a different enclosure for feeding why not just try putting the food in her cage with the light on then shutting it off after you're finished and everything is secure? she may go for the food when the lights are off and she thinks no one is around. you didn't mention trying that so why not? good luck!

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
Thats a good Idea of getting a feeding bin I havent tried that yet, I have tried putting it in then turning out all the lights, but if she sees any people at all she doesnt eat... She is really weird... Ive even tried sheeting off the part of the tank so she cant see out, and it was dark in her cage, but that didnt seem to work either, her locks are in a place that when I unlock the cage, she will see my hands.... Its weird tho... Burms usually associate opening the enclosure with food... Not comeing out to play... And shes not cage agressive either... The only agression I see from her is when shes in the bath tub, and not ready to get out... And she just hisses, I joke with my boyfriend when we are in an argument, that Ill just go sleep with the burm...
I didnt get much from her previous owner, he was in the middle of moving and just wanted the snake gone, But I know she was handeled daily, and that he was always in and out of her cage, and that shes never struck or bit... So I was thinking of getting one of those reacher things they sell on tv for old people to get things that are up high... That way I could have her room dark, and I could be in the hallway... Not out of strike range, but I figure it would better my odds of not getting bit.....

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
how long do you usually leave her with the food? sometimes with my rosy I had to wait a good hour and a half before he even went near the food to eat it after I shut the lights off. by then it was no where near as warm as it was when I put it in the feeding bin but thats the way he wanted to eat it. made no sense to me lol because my two corns eat it as soon as the mouse hits the floor of their bins.

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
The advice I got from my friends who run B&C Snakes was to over night it, so thats what ive been trying.... I really dont get it.... Its almost like she is A.D.D.... as a joke I asked the vet about ritalin.... She is a really good snake, really calm, not agressive.... Took her in as a rescue, she wasnt susposed to be a permant resident but I put in some calls to other rescues, and at the humane socity, put some ads in snake forums, and the only people who wanted here were idiots... But I couldnt ask for a better permant giant snake.... Except I jump though hoops to keep her eating... And my husbandry is as perfect as a human could do it... Its almost a religion for me....

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
hmmm, well the only thing I could think of would be to not feed her for a few weeks and then maybe try again. don't know if thats something you've tried yet. for my rosy over the almost 3 years i've had him i've learned that once he goes off food for the winter, if I look at him and he's not cruising around looking like he wants food then he won't eat. i've done that by trial and error and wasting mice. so now when I see him just laying like a lump on feeding day I know he won't eat. but once the weather starts to warm up here he's back on track.
i mention that because you said you've only had her since august I think and don't know her habits yet. she might just be like one of those pains that drives you nuts until the spring and summer comes back lol. especially since your care is fine and the vet says there's nothing wrong and she's acting as normally as you know her to be so far besides feeding.
my rosy came to me in august roughly three years ago and was feeding great until one day he stopped and I freaked out all winter long trying to feed him until it warmed up again and he started eating. sometimes he would just rather be out of his tank hanging out then eating.

Re: Princess Bell lives up to her name
Yea, I think Ill offer food every two weeks... instead of 4 bunnies wasted its only 2... and im going to get one of those gopher reacher gizmos... Its hard to hold a 5lb bunnie with tongs anyways lol... Thanks for the advice.... Its just so frustrating when they go off of feed... Ive got a bp thats doing that too, and it drives me up the wall... but thank you again and happy holidays
