I'm trying to decide...

If I should copyright my logo before I put up my website.

Probably.

I'll need to register my freelance work as a small business as soon as it takes off a little more, so I might as well copyright my logo before hand. Don't want anyone to steal the awesome strangeness that is my design work! Even if it is my personal logo.

Maybe I'm just paranoid.

Trust no one, copyright everything!

Can we see the logo? I'm curious by nature.

Shush Marsha, you didn't ask if the frogs croaked all night, I just assumed you knew.

meh, i never copywrited my logo. There really isn't a need. If ANYONE copies you, you have old files on a computer to prove it was yours first, and you could sue. If you are really worried, you could have a copy of it notarized.

Here's my logo:

Nothing too special.

(It's Halfwits Design, by the way. Ask me for the explanation sometime. )

But, I think, easy to steal and/or copy if someone decided they wanted to be called Halfwits design, too. Don't know why they would, but...

When I took copyright class as part of my design course, they talked a lot about true legal precedence. A notarized copy might work to prove my ownership, but copyright or trademarking is more binding. I'm still undecided, though. Is it worth going through the process? And what would it cost me if I didn't and then it got stolen and I didn't win ownership? Annoying dilemnas the internet has really created for us.

Trademark the logo and copyright your website. By legal standard, you own a copyright on anything that is of your creation and that you can prove. If you don't have a filed copyright however, you can't sue and have no legal standing to get compensation if someone violates your copyright or infringes on it.

Example: You create some designs and have them in your portfolio. Someone comes along and uses those exact designs and begins selling them. You could sue them for stealing your work, and you might get compensation for the funds they received from your work, but you can't sue for the infringement itself. lol

If you have a copyright filed, you can slam the thief with a 50,000 copyright infringement lawsuit as well as for lost wages and get them from all angles.

Copyrighting is worth doing the paperwork. It isn't expensive either for a general copyright that would encompass a website.

Or, another simple way would be to print out the logo, Seal it in an envelope, and mail it to yourself, when you get it, don't open it, keep it somewhere safe, if any problem ever arises you have it sealed in an envelope with a Govt stamp and the date.

You can take it into a court hearing, legal proceedings, meeting, so on, but it is a good idea to have a lawyer, judge, ect there when you open it.

Though I think if your worried about it you may want to take rich's suggestion.
