Yikes. This sounds like a very bad situation for him.
Are worried that because they IEP people are mad at you, they'll punish your son for it? I hope you are able to resolve everything, and good for you for not giving in to their little scare tactics. They are required to give him a good education. It sounds like they are using any excuse to cut corner that they can. |

I am a little worried about that, however, I will make a point of just sitting in his classroom everyday if I have to.
The minute they start that kind of nonsense is the minute I will get a lawyer, I have no issues with that. What started this,, is they almost went on strike because they were not happy with their current wages. Well two hours before the strike, they came to an agreement. In the letter the school posted on their website they stated in order to meet this agreement, there would have to be some cut backs. The first place they go is where the most money is required, which would be special ed services. Most kids in special ed services are under the contract that they are not to be taught in groups of more than 4. This then requires the school to hire additional teachers and aids. All these teachers and aids add up. When I first put him in there this year, they tried to tell me that they didnt have the funding for that, I simply stated that in his contract it is required that they hire extra people to meet his needs. They were not happy, but they did it, lol. So if they cut him they will save a lot of money every year. However they just picked a fight with the wrong momma, lol. I am a fighter and always have been, they are realizing that now. The funny part is that they contradict themselves constantly, and then they send this testing home with him for me to read, lol. One test from his everyday classroom tells me he is barely kindergarten level, yet another one from his special ed services tell me he is right at second grade level,, which I know is absolutely not true. You would think they would get together just so their stories matched, lol. But, they dont, lol. I find it interesting how this his special ed teacher says he is now doing great and can move on. She has worked with him since last September, thats it, The ones he has had since he was 4 could never get him to do as great as she says he does. So it must be a miracle and she is just the greatest teacher out there, capable of performing all these miracles in less than 5 months, lol. I dont think so.......... My son is not the only one she is trying to pull this on, I have actually met with two other parents who she is doing this to. We are now working together. |

I feel bad for the teachers. They always get the short end of the stick when it comes to being compensated for the incredible job some of them do. It's a shame that the county won't budget more for them. Most of them do deserve it.
On that note, though, the main priority of a school is education and making sure every kid is doing the best they can get them to do. If they want to make cuts, they need to start with extracuriculars, sports and day care programs. These are all things that have been added on to benefit the kids and parents, but have no real impact on the actual learning process. I hope you all can group together on this. If more people fought for their kids like you are doing, less kids would end up slipping through the cracks. |

Typh, i beg to differ on the after school sports. They keep kids organized and out of drugs. They give the kids something to do and something to strive for. Not to mention with the obesity problems in the US its good to keep them going.
Do we need to spend a million dollars on a state of the art football field? no. Doe we need sports? Yes. Do you realize, the money we have spend on the Iraq war, could have rebuilt every school in the nation? |

He will not end up slipping through the cracks, I will not allow it.
Here is the kicker,, my two oldest kids are in the "gifted kids" programs, all honor roll the whole nine yards. Did you know every one of those classes has a personal computer for each child! Is that not crazy!! Regular classrooms do not have that, and the special ed class has 2. They never even think about cutting funding for those classes. Speaking of stadiums, we just got our multi million dollar stadium last year. I dont agree with the no sports, for the most part the parents pay for that. I payed well over 800 last year for football,, that is the fee and gear and what not. I also payed out the nose for wrestling this year. You ought to see the new baseball field they are proposing, i want to know how just one of those can cost over a million dollars,, thats nuts! |

*shrug* It hasn't been too long since I've gotten out of high school, this June will make 8 years, and my brother's still there. Honestly, even though people are always saying how much those types of things help kids, I never saw it personally. Some of the kids involved in sports and a lot of the clubs were also some of the worst kids. They were generally the bullies and disruptive kids in my school. They were also the ones most likely to bring weapons to school, just to have them. Not everyone, of course. I just don't think it's the miracle cure people give it credit for. It'll help some kids, but it's not going to keep them away from drugs or violence necessarily.
Maybe that was just my area, though. I just remember if you wanted to get your hands on drugs, high school football games were the place to do it. There were all kinds of people selling if you knew who to look for. And, unfortunately, everybody knew who to look for, even if we really didn't want to, and weren't interested.Sheesh, Nicole, being a parent sounds REALLY expensive. Remind me not to try it out. ![]() |

just because it helps some kids and not all kids, doesn't mean we should stop having sports. I know it kept me out of trouble. if kids want to get into trouble they will, but those that teeter on the edge, could get tipped the right direction.

I dont know how the sports are run anywhere else, but here if you are not getting a C average you cannot participate, if they even think you are on drugs a note is sent home to momma and a doctors order is necassary before that particular child can play again. (Not that its been a problem for my kids, lol) If you are in trouble in school, you are usually kicked off the team. Their motto is, sports is a luxury.

That's a good policy. I don't know if that was the way in my school or not. Certainly if it was, the policy was either overlooked on some occassions, or the players were good at hiding what they were doing.
But I'm guessing that happens often. |

no, back in the day I played soccer,, I was a horrible rotten little kid who always got into trouble and had horrible grades. They never kicked me off because I was extremely good at it. I was benched once by a ref for extreme aggresion and my coach fought it until he got his way and I was put back in the game. It was all about winning back in the day,, and if you were not good you were a benchwarmer, if you were good at the game but always in trouble and had hideous grades it did not matter........ you still played.
