40 page war report from my sons class,, poor kid..

my poor son has a 40 page report that he has to do on the Vietnam war for his honors english class. The subject is the average life expectancy of a soldier in that war. In doing a lot of the research with him, I can tell you there is hardly a dry eye for me! Seventeen year old boys fighting in that war, dropped off and killed within a week or two,, sometimes the same day. My heart just breaks for their families, myself being a mom,, it just kills me,, I could not imagine my son in two years dying, let alone,, like that. I tell you I am an avid supporter of our troops, but I think I have to draw the line on 17 year old kids fighting for their counry and dying for their country. At that age do they really have any idea what they are fighting for? Do they have any idea what they were dying for? I dont think any of my own kids would understand that at seventeen. They were all so young, alot of them 18 and 19.
I think this is an excellent report for him to do though, and an excellent eye opener, for a child who has lived a very sheltered life. I am not sure sure my tear ducts can take any more though. When the class is done with all of the reports it will the be debated respectfully,, I will definately attnd those few days in his class.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I had to do a few similar reports when I was in school. Most notably, I did one on WWI - which has it's own sets of horrors for young men.

I'm pretty much anti-war, but I have done a LOT of research on war and the results of war - what it does to the economy, what we gain, what we lose, and most importantly what the effect is on the people involved. It's pretty awful all the way around. It's always a lose-lose situation, even for the "winning" side. No one comes out unaffected. I don't think most young people going in really know what it involves. The media makes it all look glamorous and heroic, but most of the time that's not the case.

The worst for me are the tales of people who survive but are mutilated or incompacitated, and the tales of the awful things done to the civilians.
