An update on my brother: he's doing much better. The doctors were mystified for awhile; he was in so much constant pain (which they said he shouldn't be in with renal failure), and then suddenly his levels started normalizing all on their own.
And then they told us that he also has dry Pleurisy, which is apparently when the lining of the lungs becomes dried out. Knowing that, his symptoms suddenly make a lot of sense. The thing is that Pleurisy can cause Renal Failure - but Renal Failure can also cause Pleurisy.
Boggles the mind, right? Now they're trying to figure out which came first.
Either way, the problem is fixable with some antibiotics, and he's doing fantastically better, so it's a huge relief.
That's the good part of this post.
This is the bad part.
We have older friends who go away often on vacation. When they leave, my family usually birdsits their wonderful, wonderful conure. He's the best bird I've ever known - and I usually hate birds. I'm always telling them I'm going to steal him from them.
Well now I don't have to.
The husband, who recently recovered from open heart surgery had a massive stroke just three days ago, and there's nothing more they can do for him. They've already told everyone he's not going to survive. His wife called us yesterday and asked us to take the bird permanently.
Of course, we agreed right away. But this bird was basically his baby. It's hard to look at the bird and realize that in a very short time his former owner will no longer be with us. Death is always hard, but something like this - so sudden and violently devastating to him - it's really awful to see.
But in a way, it's nice to have something of his to remember him by. I didn't get to keep anything of my own great grandmother's at all.
*sigh* Sometimes it seems things in life go from bad to worse.
