Last November, while hunting, my brother found a small garter snake, out in the cold. He had his 9 year old daughter with him, and she begged him to bring it home to warm up. So he spoke with his landlord, who said reptiles were fine, and he brought it home. I gave him a cage for it, and he got it eating worms and minnows, and it has fattened up nicely over the winter. They plan to release it in the spring, on the property it was taken from.
