Question HELP!!! My Beardie is Sick!

Hi, I'm new here and I'm 13 in a month. I've had my Bearded Dragon, Sandy (long story. we used to think "he" was a "she" anyway...) for about ten months. About three months ago he had started showing signs of an illness called "Gout". Gout occurs when the uric acid crystals are deposited in the limbs and kidneys. It causes a lot of swelling. Dad did some research and found out that the only reported articles on Gout are on mammals. Usually seen in humans and rarely seen in animals let alone reptiles. So the only thing I could do was bathe him twice a day and give him only 2 roaches, plus A LOT of greens. So that's what I did up to 4 days ago. He had been really swollen (more so than usual) , and without us noticing he fell off his log and under the heat light on his back. When we found him we pulled him out and put him in lukewarm water. He rapidly heated up the water, his body temp. was up so high. We didn't know if he had cooked any important organs, therefore we didn't know if he was going to make it the night. We took out his log and hoped he'd make it. Well, he had. The thing was that he was acting REALLY sick (barely keeping his eyes open, hardly ever moving, etc.). but the day before yesterday he suddenly got a new symptoms, paralysis. He couldn't move his hips, back legs, and his cloaca was hanging open. He acted as if he was going to die that day. He didn't and is still alive. His cloaca isn't open anymore but he's still acting a bit..well.. off. I've been giving him daily " Therapy" which is when I put him in our bathtub and move his paralized joints. But now he is Falling asleep ( literally he CANT stay awake and you can't wake him up unless you dangle him upside down) constantly, even in the water. He just go's under but doesn't wake up to get himself out. SO I pull him out as soon as it happens, but even so he still has inhaled a good bit of water. Earlier he wouldn't wake up even when i dangled him. I thought for sure he was dead because I couldn't see him breathing. I dunked him one last time for a feeble attempt to wake him and he awoke but looked terrible. I don't know what to do. He is just suffering. I'm pretty sure he isn't going to make it but it would be nice if any of you had ANY information to share. I'm doing all I can but it doesn't feel like enough. I'm racing against the clock until his death. PLEASE if you have any info that could possibly help don't hesitate and go ahead and post.

    Thanks
    Gina

Re: HELP!!! My Beardie is Sick!

Oh My Goodness.....PLEASE talk to your parents, and tell them your Bearded Dragon needs to get to a vet ASAP....I'm so sorry that your Bearded Dragon is in this condition, and I am glad that you are trying to find some answers here, but in all honesty, what you have described is beyond anything that the internet is going to be able to help you with..your Bearded Dragon needs to see a vet ASAP if there is to be any hope....(and in all honesty, if he fell off his log and onto his back under the heat lamp, and didn't move or turn over on his own, I have the distinct feeling that he has some serious internal injuries, and there is a good chance that the vet won't be able to do anything other than put him out of his misery.)
Again, I'm so sorry, and I know you are trying to find help, but from what you are describing, your Bearded Dragon is in SERIOUS trouble and really does need to be taken to a vet.

    Yep VET pronto.

And if you do come back to this site, please tell us how you have been keeping him. Enclosure, temps, substrate, etc...

To me it sounds like his digestive system is impacted, NOT gout. This can only be solved by a vet.

You need to stop trying to diagnose an illness by "researching" and get the lizard to a qualified herp veterinarian. All your "therapy" is doing is making the animal miserable!
You need a good vet NOW!

Re: HELP!!! My Beardie is Sick!

    HELLO ALL,

There are no reptile vets around here. My parents know. We own 15 so we check them all daily. It is gout because he has had it for 3 month and if it was an impaction he would be dead by now. He lives in a 3x3 cage he has a hot end at 95 and a cool end at 85. He lives on unshredded paper towels. and he eats a variety of home grown tropical roaches.

    Merlin,

Thank you for your concern but I'm not doing kiddy research. Ive been looking at trusted sites among the Herp world as along with vet sites. I'm not hurting him by doing "therapy" if he is paralyzed then he cant feel it and I'm just not letting his muscles lock up or die. My dad was a vet assistant when he was younger so he has been helping. And there are no herp vets anywhere around us. I am also a member to 10 bearded dragon forums. So I sent my message out to all of them. But I understand you concern and I'm not trying to start a fight. Please don't accuse me of hurting my animal.

    TO ALL,

Thank you for the sympathy! And your suggestions, but as I have said there are no herp vets anywhere around us. If any of you have anymore suggestions it would mean a lot to me.

    THANKS
    Gina

p.s Sandy can now move one of his hind legs.

Re: HELP!!! My Beardie is Sick!

    Hi Gina,
ANY vet will examine the lizard and give an opinion, plus they have access to much more info than you do, trying to diagnose health problems yourself is not the way to help the animal, and your dad being an ex veterinary nurse doesn`t mean anything, they cannot diagnose problems either, so if you really want to try and help, see a vet! Everyone IS trying to give you some good advise.
Edit; what else besides the roaches have you been feeding?

Approx where are you located. There are very few places where there are no reptile vets. And any vet could look at him to see if they could determine a problem. If they don't have reptile expertise,...they can get on the phone with a vet who does.
It is gout because he has had it for 3 month and if it was an impaction he would be dead by now
I'm sorry but YOU are not qualified to diagnose anything!
    Impaction does not kill immediately.
And there are several things that could cause paralysis.
he has a hot end at 95
A bearded dragon should have a basking area of 105-110 degrees.
I'm not doing kiddy research. Ive been looking at trusted sites among the Herp world as along with vet sites.
I am also a member to 10 bearded dragon forums.
I repeat,...YOU are not competent to diagnose an illness no matter how many websites you visit. You need a vet to look at him and determine the exact cause of the problem or it isn't going to go away.
I'm not hurting him by doing "therapy" if he is paralyzed then he cant feel it
And exactly how are you determining that? Just because a limb cannot move doesn't meant that it doesn't have feeling in it.
And how would you take it if some giant thing grabbed you twisted you around and dunked you head first underwater.
I don't mean to sound harsh but what you are doing is not appropriate. This animal seriously needs to be seen by a vet!

    Merlin

Like I said I understand your concern and I cant make an appointment to our vet because she is scared of lizards. I'm not twisting his limbs I gently moving them. I only dunked him because I thought he was dead, and I was trying my best to revive him. And as far as I know you cant do CPR on a lizard. I couldn't see him breathing. And I'm his owner not a " Giant thing" He knows who I am and Ive hand raised him sense he was a baby. And what makes you competent enough to make the decision. I was asking for help not a lecture. Please do not post anymore on this subject if all you are going to do is tell me I'm hurting sandy.

    To ALL,
Ill try to make an appointment and see if one of the nurses can help. And I understand that I am not a vet but Im trying my best. Ill update you if anything happens if you would like.

    Thanks

    Gina
