    Broken tail!

Ahhhh! I feel so guilty.... I don't know if I did something and didn't realize it, I can't think of how this happened. The only thing I can think of is that I was in a hurry and closed the cage door on his little tail, but I am always really careful...

Anyway, the end of his tail is all broken and nasty. It's about an inch, maybe a little less where the skin is cut through and the bone is clearly showing, it is almost hanging off... I instently cleaned it with paroxide and he doesn't seem to be in any pain, he even let me touch the end, but I'm not sure what to do from here... I think I may have to just cut the dangling bit off, as I am terrified it will get infected. The nearest vet is over an hour away and since I work at Toys R Us it is almost impossible to get enough time to go see him. Meh! I took some pictures, but I am afraid they didn't turn out so well... and they don't show how twisted the end is, but they are better than nothing.

I had my boss remove part of my iguanas tail because I was far too big of a wuss to do it myself. If you decide to remove it yourself make a clean break (using your hands rather than a cutting instrument is better because it heals quicker) ABOVE the break.

    Surgery - Thursday!

Oh...hmmm...bearded dragon...i'm not sure if breaking their tail off above the break is the best idea, we should have others weigh in before you get to snapping.

Iguanas tails are designed to break off as a defense technique. Bearded Dragons are not set up this way. I would not try to break it. You may do more damage than it already has. I would really suggest a vet.

Yea i have to agree i would suggest not breaking and taking him to a vet. If it would have snapped clean off maybe then it would have been better, i dunno how much better tho. Good luck!

i have a bearded dragon and when i bout him i notes a pice of his tail was gone this wont hurt him to bad i suggest. having the stuff they use when you cut your self shaving and need to stop the bleeding handy also i suggest. watching his tail closely incase of infection i wouldn't beet your self up over this the fact that you were so worried about your dragon tells me you really care about him and it was a simple mistake

    Hello,

Iguanas and Bearded Dragons, as merlin stated, are not the same. Iguanas have "fracture planes" in their tails where they are designed to break off if they find themself in a jam. Bearded Dragons do not have the fracture planes and breaking the tail off would likely be very painful and cause an infection.

Watch the tail, and make sure that it doesn't become infected. If the look of the tail bothers you, take him in to see a vet and allow the vet to amputate the end of the tail. If needed, the vet can then administer sutures.

If you notice the dragon acting differently, this could be an indicator that the tail has become infected at which point you shouldn't hesitate to get him/her to the vet.

(Just to note, this post was made in the HCD Health forum. That indicates this herp is likely a Bearded Dragon Lacey. lol)
