Scenting
Yet another question from yours truly.
I just met a friend here in Hong Kong who has over 10 ball pythons! Amongst other snakes. He introduced me to this place that breeds lab rats ranging in size increments from about 4 inches long to the size of a small cat! However, my ball is too small, and he suggests that I use normal fuzzys for a few feedings. And switch to these lab mice in a couple months. He said that from his knowledge, some ball pythons will have problems switching from species of mice to another, although all of his that he's ever had had no problem with accepting the lab mice off the bat. I asked him how to deal with it if that happens and he said one method is scenting, although he has no experience with it as hes never needed to. So how do you "Scent" a mouse with the previos kind of mice? Do you just get the old mice and rub it onto the new one? For how long do you rub and how hard? Or do you have to like squeeze it out like you squeeze lemon juice on a salad? |

You just take the dead mice (if F/T warm them up a bit first) and lightly rub the mouse you usually feed all over the new one. You don't have to squeeze or rub hard. Just make sure that the head of the new mouse has been rubbed over as that's usually the end the snake starts at.
For most snakes, if it smells a little bit like what they know as food and they are hungry, they'll take it.... just like they'll bite your hand if it's warm and has been near the mouse.
