Another Adoption Here

Well It's been sometime since I posted and I have a new member. After carfeul studying I am a firm believer of common sense that the longer skinnier tails are females as they need more scales when probing and the shorter for the males, therefore by that rule I have 1.2. Here is the new female who is 34" who's owner is a college student who gave up on her as she stopped eating and after getting her yesterday I heard her wheezing a little,so I wonder how long she had been cold, as he walked up my driveway with her around his neck while it was snowing and 20* so enough said, i have gotten all sorts like this one and turned them around. She last ate 3 weeka go and will give her a few days to settle in and then offer her food. She has been offered live only in her cage, but will try the FT in a plastic container by the dangeling method and see if that works. Without further adue here she is.

Diggy, if you hear wheezing, she might have early signs of an upper respiratory infection. Have you seen any muscous or saliva coming from her mouth or keeping her mouth open. Which could also be why she is not eat, although you know balls are picky anyway, lol. Just keep an eye on her, she might need to go to the vet.

yep thats what im aware of i also noticed one eye is crinkely so that means a bad shed like one other I had, therefore there might be some skin blocking a nostril, ill keep a check on her and listen to it and see what happens between now and next shed(providing she eats for me) but no gapping or drooling.

Diggy, firstly, congrats on the new addition. Pretty little thing

I just wanted to first draw attention to your gender remark:
Quote:
After carfeul studying i am a firm believer of common sense that the longer skinnier tails are females as they need more scales when probing and the shorter for the males, therefore by that rule i have 1.2.
Males actually have longer tails, as this area holds their hermipenes and probes will go in deeper. Females have shorter tails, and the probe will enter only a few scales in depth. Having said that, male boids can often tense up that region when probing, leading you to believe that they are "females". In any case, the tail length is not an exact science and should not be relied on to sex any snake. If you want to know for sure you should have the snakes probed by an experienced person.

Regarding the wheezing, I agree with Marsha - this could be early signs of an RI so you should really get a vet check up to rule any nasties out and be on the safe side.

This could be the reason for the non-feeding, however Royals are typically fussy feeders, and seem to eat as they want, not as they should Males are more typical of this, particularly when they reach breeding age and in breeding season or over winter when they would naturally brumate, but again the non-feeding doesn't point to one gender - we have a female who is very picky and will only eat once every two or three feeds. Let your guy settle in, don't handle, except for a vet visit, and then try a few feeds of f/t. Don't worry if s/he doesn't eat for some weeks or even months, as long as s/he has a clean bill of health. One of our boys went off food for 8 months last year!

Good luck and let us know how you both get on

I agree with everything said above: I would only add this:
Make sure you keep that one away from any of your other reptiles for a nice long quarantine period!
Keep the temperatures accurate with the warm side being at the top of the warm range for BPs (the heat will help boost the immune system if s/he's getting ill)
Be careful about the eye thing: sometimes BPs get wrinkles on their eyes that is not necessarily an unshed eye cap (some people have blinded their BPs trying to peel something like that off when it was only a sign of dehydration.
Just make sure it has enough water available at all times.

Good luck with the little one -- s/he's gorgeous.
The guy who brought him/her to you sounds like an idiot!

I agree with Andrea on the eye problem. It was suggest by my vet to use Cod Liver Oil (found in the viamin section, oil filled capsule), put some on a q-tip and rub it on their eyes.

Yes I agree with the eye thing - increase the humidity and see how her eye is in a week or two; sometimes the eyes dent in slightly due to low humidity and it can look like a stuck eye-cap. If she does have a stuck cap it can come off with the next shed, if not you can very carefully remove it.

Also, regardless of her wheeze, I would take her to a vet for a check up to make sure she doesn't have any illness or parasites; not all can present symptoms obvious to us and it would be wise to at least have a faecel exam done. And, as Andrea said, make sure you keep him/her in quarantine conditions away from your other animals for 3months.
