Snakes will shed their skin in a single piece. If your ball is shedding in pieces, you may need to increase the humidity even more or give the snake a nice warm soak.

Once the shed has completed, check to see if the eye caps have been successfully shed. This is a dangerous area to be cautious of. If the eye caps were not shed, you should give the snake frequent warm baths to help loosen them. Eye caps that have not shed will keep the snake irritated. If multiple sheds build up over the eye caps and are not shed, they can lead to blindness or impaired vision.

If the soaking does not help to remove the eye caps, bring the snake into a qualified veterinarians office and have them show you the safe way to remove the caps. Never attempt to remove the eye caps on your own. You could cause injury to the snake and impair its vision beyond repair.

Yes the first order of things is to determine if there actually ARE retained caps. What leads you to belive that there are? Many people read about this being a problem and assume that the caps are retained. There have been cases of over zealous keepers actually trying to remove the LENS of the eye when there really were no caps to remove.

the one eye seems almost cracked in the middle and there are flakes of skin still around the eye. both are silvery. I'm just a newbie at this and dont want to miss anything.

Jay once told me....a damp warm towel and a pillow case will often work....put the snake wrapped in the towel in the pillow case and they will move around and often things will be taken care of...good luck...Lyn

You want the towel really wet! Place both snake and towel in a wet pillowcase(tied) and leave in the cage overnight. the dampness will soften the caps and the snake moving around inside the material will usually rub the caps off.

cool after talking to you today I noticed Elvis wrapped around one of his water dishes and kinda rubbing the left side of his head in the bedding. Now after his bath I can actually see his eye ball. Thankyou for the help.
