Question

Ok, Most of you know I got my BP yesterday. Well I got him out this eveing to add this log thing I got tonight to his tank. So I had him on my lap while I put it in. Since I had him out I thought I let him roam around on me for a few. Then I seen his vent start to open. I went to put him back in his tank. Cause I thought it was going to be another use me as his bathroom..lol.. well it went back to normal. So I got him back out since I wasnt done in the tank, and then he did it again, with his vent. Im not sure what hes doing... unless trying to breed with my arm, but hes 5 months old. Any ideas?

Mine does that too sometimes. I'm not really sure if it is a stimulation response, or if it is a threat response -- and we just got lucky the cloaca was empty!
I tend to think it's the former, but I'm not really sure... just that it has happened so many times to me and he's never used me as his toilet... ever!

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as the vent closes again.

(Also, since he's so new to your house, it might be best not to handle him for a few days and give him a chance to settle in. BPs can get easily stressed and even if he seems calm, too much handling can result in him not eating. And then YOUR stress starts!)
Good luck!

Yeah I wasnt wanting to handle him more than I had to yesterday, but I got the log for him to climb on and it was hard to put it in with him in there, and me moving around.

Thanks for the help.

This is a typical defence sign of Royals, particularly males - they open their cloaca when scared or feeling threatened. Since Royals are particularly shy snakes it is probably best to leave him alone completely for a week, then try him with his first feed and let him settle in and become an established feeder before you start getting him used to you.

One of our adult males, Taz, used to do this regularly when he was younger - LOL it was one way of telling what sex he was!!

It could be a little worse. The next step, especially with corns or ratsnakes, is the infamous musking.

And once that happens you know why its a defensive move!
I wouldn't eat something that smelled like THAT!

Ah, well I was curious why he was doing it. Yeah I do plan on leaving him alone for a week. Don't want to stress him to bad. Thanksfor the info.I was just making sure he wasn't trying to mate my arm... How is it a defencive move?

LOL ah the infamous sweet smell of colubrid musk, just love it don't ya Fran and Merlin?!

MoogleBass, can't really say why it's a defensive thing, but Royals do tend to do this when scared or intimidated. It's certainly a sign of this, not necessarily defence. (Unless they are just threatening to copy corn snakes )
