Ball Python Question

Are ball pythons easy to take care of? Are they a good starter snake? I was just wondering because I am thinking of getting one and needed help. What are your experiences with ball pythons?

I have a BP and love him. I know they are often cited as a good starter snake; but I'm not so sure.
They are difficult eaters (especially in winter) and it's so frustrating you'll want to scream.
I have found that not handling mine for a day or two BEFORE a feeding, usually helps -- but not always! GGGGGGGGGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
Get some good books and print out you can find about them for reference. I have a big binder full of info to double check stuff when I need it.
Good luck whatever you decide. (Most people recommend cornsnakes as good beginner snakes... they grow to a good size and come in a multitude of color morphs.

I'm with you on this one Andrea, althought as you say often cited as a good beginner snake I would say they are not for the same reasons you mentioned. The feeding can be infuriating at times lol

I dont really agree with BlackJack. bps are often not starter snakes. they are difficult eaters and stress easily. if you buy one, ask the breeder to feed him/her first to make sure he/she is healthy

Elan, that's what Andrea was trying to say in her post.. although BPs are usually recommended as good beginner snakes, their non-feeding can be a common concern to new owners. Also they are generally a shy species, meaning that handling is best done by a calm handler, away from noise and too much activity. However, despite this, they do make excellent pet snakes - they are docile, slow, and don't grow too big, but I would have to put corn snakes way above them as the best starter snake. Have you owned any reptiles previously?
