Exclamation Need Help with a Sick Ball Python!

My son and I are locally known by the pet store as reptile lovers so today when I went in to get feeders for our collection the manager gave me a ball python. They were going to kill it but he felt that I might be able to save it.

The snake is swollen, and squishy to the touch. she is not opposed to being handled and shows no visible signs of bieng uncomfortable. If I squeeze or poke her a little to hard she opens her mouth and hisses so it obviously causes discomfort.

At the store she has been eating and pooping just fine, she spent 90% of her time lounging in her water bowl.

They have taken her to a crappy vet, the vet could not figure out what is wrong. I have an appointment for her Monday @ 9AM with the only local vet that treats exotics.

I would love some ideas / input and maybe some treatment ideas.

That one stumps me. Let us know what the vet says.

Poor girl, she looks so swollen!
Vet sounds like a good idea, in the meantime what are her basking temps and a run down of her setup, maybe someone will be able help you out while you are waiting for a vet.

Re: Need Help with a Sick Ball Python!

    Update:

Chubby died about an hour ago. She died in the hands of a herpatologist 5 minutes after he discovered a massive infestation of mites inside her cloaca.

Fact of the matter here is that she was struggling to breathe due to the swelling, which was indeed a backup of urine and fecal matter caused by a mite infestation.

The herpatologist also suggested that she may have had inclusion body disease based on the symptoms he watched her exhibit.

Poor girl I'm so sorry she died. I was going suggest that she had a backup, but you said she was eating and defecating fine at the store, so I didn't bother. At least you didn't buy her. Also, keep an eye out for mites on your other reptiles.

Re: Need Help with a Sick Ball Python!

We already sprayed everything down with prevent-o-mite, and she never made it into the reptile room due to her needing a quarantine. Also neither myself or my son were in there after handling her so I think we will be ok on the mite issue. We also soak our reptiles with a very mild Dawn dish solution since it does wonders at keeping mites away and helping them shed.

Thanks everyone for your help and concern.

    Poor girl.

It's nice to see people who really try to help out a sick reptile instead of just putting them down or letting them suffer. Thank you for your efforts to save her.

Sorry about your loss. I read somewhere if ball pythons constantly lay in the water bowl they could have an infestation.
