Monty post-shed
Hi all,
Well, little Monty finally shed last night after hiding himself away in his moist moss box for days! It was another really good shed and he's looking more beautiful than ever. And he's growing fast: when we got him in October he was just 20" and 116 grams (4 oz); today he measured in at just over 23" and 160 grams (5.6 oz!) Here's Monty today:

Monty looks beautiful Andrea! Acacia is really flicking her tongue at your stud!
She is just about the same size, and wolfing down two mice a week like they're going out of fashion! ![]()

Seastore!
That is an AWESOME photo - the one with the reflection in the table! That is prize photo quality - you need to submit that to a photo magazine or an animal magazine that has a photo contest. It is so cool how you got his entire reflection captured! Oh by the way - he is really cute! Baxter |

thanks
Thanks everyone,
Actually Martin deserves the credit for the photos. And Monty deserves the credit for being gorgeous!! Rachel -- Acacia eats 2 mice a week?! F/T? I'm SOOOOOO jealous!!! I've been struggling with Monty and the F/T mice, but usually if I can get him to take one, I just shove the other in as he's finishing off the first and he swallows both. I feed him 2 every 2 weeks. How much does Acacia weigh? Should I be feeding Monty more often? ![]()

I've wondered about how much to be feeding too... mine's roughly the same size and is eating 1 half-grown mouse once a week, sometimes I think I should try to give him 2, but I just don't know how to tell if he needs more or whatever. *sigh*'
EDIT: I fed him tonight and tried feeding him a 2nd mouse after he finished the first one, and as far as I can tell, he ate it (he took it into his hide, so I can't really see). So I guess that probably means I need bigger mice, eh? I have a couple half-grown left in the freezer, I'll probably feed him both next week, and then when I restock, I'll get full grown. |

I've just graduated Monty to a bigger sized mouse: average about 22-25 grams. I was feeding him two 12-14 gram mice every two weeks. He seems fine eating every two weeks instead of every week and it gives me more time to play with him. Since I've had him, he's gone from 116 gr to 160 gr... so I don't think he's starving.
But I'm soon going to try to convert him to pinky or fuzzy rats about the same size. I've read that rats are actually a better choice of food: more muscle and "substance" and less hair. I figure he'll have to graduate to rats at some point and I might as well do it now while he's young.

Andrea that glass table picture is great!
Princess Erica You should be feeding a prey item about the same size or a bit larger than the snake's body at its widest point. Its also best to get them on rats as soon as possible. They are more nutritious for the size of prey and you are going to have to change to rats anyway as the snake grows. Its easier to change them while they are young and haven't imprinted on mice.
