    I Think We're Ready?

I used to be really into reptiles, having had quite the collection of snakes, lizards, even a Caimen (for a little while Mom FLIPPED lol) but when I got pregnant with my first child my husband made me get rid of them Now with my youngest turning two I think I'm ready to start again. I wanted a Ball Python, preferably not a baby, one that my kids would not be handling, but if they wanted to pet it wouldn't strike them. They are very active, but I am also very aware of proper handling and would make sure it's enclosure was stress free (no knocking screaming, pushing etc.) Do any of you have kids, or ideas as far as stress free (for the snake) living for reptiles in homes with children?

I have small grandkids. They are NOT allowed in the reptile room without supervision.
Even the most well behaved kids may get impatient and help themselves. Particularly a 2 year old should be kept away when not supervised.

Putting the animals in a locked room will probably be your safest course of action,....
But then, what are you going to do with the reptiles?

    Sorry, I couldn't resist!:o

    Re: I Think We're Ready?

The title of your thread makes me wonder if you're really ready. Have you and your husband actually discussed all of this well? Getting a pet like a ball python is a long term commitment. I am not trying to be discouraging, just realistic. I have several in my home currently who are rescues, because people didn't want the long term commitment and lost interest. I made my daughter research ball pythons extensively before she got her first one. She was around 20 at the time. She has no kids of her own yet and still lives here at home. She has shown her nieces and nephew how to hold and respect the snake, but an adult needs to be present at all times. Please consider all the angles first. If you really think you are ready to commit, make sure all your supplies and living arrangements meet what you need before bringing the new pet home. My grandnephew was given a ball python recently for his 8th birthday, but is not allowed to have it out without help, as he has no real muscles and has to be monitored carefully so the snake doesn't hurt him. It was a good choice for a pet for him, as he has breathing issues around other pets. Good luck.
